Arthur Moody Obituary

MOODY III, Arthur Maxey, 72, died from Covid Pneumonia on Monday, February 5, 2024.

Art was born to Arthur Maxey Jr. and Martha Harrison Moody on December 17, 1951. He grew up on a dairy farm in Dinwiddie, Virginia with his siblings Susan Chappell (John), Libby Bourne (Ken), Harrison Moody (Debbie), and Nancy Hudgins (Will). He pursued a degree in biology at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. There he met his wife Amanda Linden Moody through the Circle K service club. Art's career path led him from optometry (military and civilian) to tax preparation, and from Philadelphia to Germany to Louisiana to England and then finally to Chester, Virginia. Together, Art and Amanda enjoyed a life of adventure and service that they were able to share with their two children Peter Moody (Sangeun Yu) and Amy Tirrell (Thomas). During his near 20 year battle with cancer, Art joined Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He cherished the active social justice ministry of the First Congregational Christian United Church of Christ, where he served as treasurer. An avid and skilled genealogist, Art loved bringing his extended family together. A gardener, hiker, and Sierra Club member, he cared deeply about protecting the Earth for future generations. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren: Thomas V & Linden Tirrell and Danto & Caspian Moody. Art was one of a kind: a true lover of life, nature, and other people, and is missed by many.

A celebration of life ceremony is planned for early April; further details will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through checks or website: https://pages.lls.org/tnt/va/yourway24/donations

We were fortunate to travel with Arthur and Amanda thru Ecuador and Peru. During the summer of 2023 we explored the Galápagos Islands and Machu Picchu. Arthur was a champion traveler, never skipping a chance to explore.
My condolences to his family, especially the grandchildren who he loved dearly. While I never met them I know them from his stories.

Connie and I are certainly sorry to receive this news and send our condolences to the family. I have fond memories of Art.
As a transplanted service brat with no friends when I first arrived at DCHS, Art almost immediately befriended me. Although our paths diverged over the years, I never forgot the overnight trip to his family farm and the introduction to dairy farming and 5am chores. He was kindhearted and super-intelligent, graduating at the top of our class. His friendship made a lasting impression upon me. I am sure that his reward in Heaven is great.
