I just learned of Barbara's death and want to say that Virginia has lost a pioneering and dedicated advocate for the elderly. Barbara developed & supervised the first adult protective services program at the Richmond City Dept. of Social Services. This was at a time when very few communities anywhere in Virginia (or the United States) were taking an active role in investigating and intervening in cases of elder abuse. Her work was both ground breaking and inspirational. She was a mentor and friend to many of us who were young social workers during these exciting times. She will be remembered and missed.

Patrick Family,

My deepest sympathy to you during your time of loss. It is refreshing to know a group of people that truly put family first. Martha would comment on how she and her siblings work together to ensure that her parents got to where they needed safely. Martha also spoke fondly of the great family vacations. Reflect on the great times and embrace your mother's many wonderful accomplishments.

To the Patrick family,

The world has indeed lost a wonderful woman who practiced her faith every day. I was lucky to have known Barbara through the Catecumenate program at Epiphany and I treasured our friendship. I remember when the twins were born and saw them baptized at St. Pauls. How proud Barbara was of her family! She leaves many friends in the Catholic community to mourn her loss. My prayers are with you.

I find it hard to lose and thus part, with one who held a special place in my heart.

It’s never easy to say good-bye,

when salty tears are what fills my eyes.

Memories are but footprints in my heart, now that it seems like we are worlds apart.

Time together seemed the greatest reward, now I must release you to the Lord.

What was, and was given, is a precious treasure, something which time could not possibly measure.

Hopes, ambitions and dreams left untold, they glitter and glimmer like mosaic gold.

Each sunrise and sunset, so many have been blessed, by your love and tenderness.

Your memories in poetry I will write and say, but it is in your actions, that you taught us, that I will continue to pray. ...by Cynthy

We will miss you Barbara,

Love, Cynthy & Steve Johnson

Martha, Susan, Ken & Mr. Patrick,

I’m so sorry about Barbara's death. I’m sure it’s a relief that her suffering is over. I also know that you miss her very much. I hope that wonderful memories will help to give you comfort as you go through this difficult time. Here is a poem that a friend gave me after my Grandmother’s death.

Love,

Debbie (Craven) Bragg

To Those I Love

If I should ever leave you,

Whom I love

To go along the silent way...

Grieve not.

Nor speak of me with tears.

But laugh and talk of me

As if I were beside you there.

(I'd come...I'd come,

Could I but find a way!

But would not tears

And grief be barriers?)

And when you hear a song

Or see a bird I loved,

Please do not let the thought of me

Be sad...for I am loving you

Just as I always have...

You were so good to me!

There are so many things

I wanted still to do...

So many things I wanted to say to you...

Remember that I did not fear...It was

Just leaving you

That was so hard to face.

We cannot see beyond...

But this I know;

I loved you so...

'twas heaven here with you!

Barbara dedicated years to helping the aged who were neglected, exploited or abused. I am grateful to have been able to have worked for her. God bless her family whom she deeply loved.
