Beverley Wellford Obituary

Beverley Randolph "Randy" Wellford, Jr. of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, died Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at home with his loving wife by his side.

Randy was born October 25, 1957 in Wilmington, Delaware, the second child of Beverley Randolph Wellford and Joyce Ellin Moale Walmsley Wellford. He attended Tower Hill School and Holderness School. Randy started college at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and later graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.A. in English in 1981. He received his law degree from Washington and Lee University in 1985.

Randy spent more than two decades raising his daughter, Rachel, and working as an attorney in Richmond, while serving on the vestry and helping with youth programs at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He relocated to Northern Virginia, where he later met his wife, Karen. They moved to Surfside Beach in 2023.

Randy loved being outside. During his final years in Burke, Virginia, he spent many hours gardening on the hill next to his home, dubbing it "Wellford's Folly". He always made time for mountain biking trips with his childhood friends, well into their old man years and even when it meant a few broken bones. He loved playing tennis with his Fat Boys in Richmond and getting out on the water to sail. For years, Randy coached youth soccer and basketball for his daughter's teams; obsessively watching Coach Mike Krzyzewski's VHS tapes on the fundamentals of basketball. Randy was a history buff, an avid reader and loved to share his favorite movies with others. He was a musician and music lover; you could often find him playing the Grateful Dead on his guitar in the second shed he built to work on his bikes and listen to music. Randy was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, supporting the Birds through thick and thin. He was also the biggest dog lover, being the best friend to many pups over the years. But above all he loved his family and friends and being a dad.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Bev and Joyce. He is survived by his wife Karen (Luebs) Wellford, his daughter Rachel Hollingsworth Wellford, his brother Bede Walmsley Wellford and his wife Leigh Breidenbach, his sister Ellin Wellford Grant and her husband Michael Leigh Grant, his stepchildren Russell Gartman and his wife Betsy and daughter Chloe, Dale Gartman, and Grace Gartman, his nephew Jan Harrison Wellford and his wife Megan McCourt Wellford, his nieces Katherine Steele Wellford Seidman and Emma Randolph Grant, and his grandnieces and grandnephews Finn Bernard Wellford, Matilda Mary Wellford, Jacob Donald Seidman, and Corina Joyce Seidman, as well as many cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd, Richmond, VA.

Randy was always great company and a great friend to me. He helped guide me through life issues and would share his take on any situation which arose. He also was my tennis doubles partner and a founding member of the FBTL. He also had a great sense of humor. I never left his company without a smile on my face. I will sorely miss him. RIP brother Randy.

Love you so, my bro. Thank you for being my rock and my touchstone, always there for me and for everyone you loved. So happy you had found Karen and loved your life and new home. So heartbroken they did not fix you in time. Thank you for being the absolute best brother, uncle and brother- in -law a family could ever hope for. Rest in peace, beloved brother of mine. I miss you so much already, it hurts.

Prayers, gratitude and hugs to the wonderful Karen Luebs Wellford who did absolutely all she could, and loved Rand unconditionally and with her whole heart, and so so much patience.

Prayers and all our love to daughter Rachel. What a blessing that you all were in touch despite the distance.

Prayers and love to all our family and friends who knew and loved the one & only
B. R.W., Jr. - not always easy, but 100% worth it. Our world will never be the same without him.

Love you to the moon and back B.R.

I met Randy (and the rest of the Delaware "MTBOYZ") in 2000. As the only two riders from Richmond, Randy and I had the pleasure of carpooling together on our annual rides. Those were some of the best 2-3 hours of conversation I've had in my entire life. From Plato to pizza to pre-history to politics to planing-hull sailboats, Randy's intelligence, curiosity and wit were matched only by his empathy and love for the rest of the world. He was the quintessential "good egg" and I loved him dearly. We will miss him more than can be said here, and send much love to all of his family and friends. --Phil & Dana
