Brenda Longest Obituary

Brenda Taylor Longest

Brenda Taylor Longest, 82, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025. To those who loved her-and there were many-Brenda was a source of constant kindness, quiet strength, and boundless generosity. Born on July 1, 1943, in Hopewell, Virginia, to the late Emmett and Katherine Carwile Taylor, Brenda lived a life full of purpose and connection. She enjoyed a 47-year career with the U.S. Department of Defense, where she was known not only for her professionalism but also for the genuine friendships she developed throughout her service. In 2011, her accomplishments were honored when she was inducted into the Defense Logistics Agency Hall of Fame. After retiring, she continued the work she loved with a government contractor founded by a former colleague, remaining active, engaged, and surrounded by people she deeply appreciated. No matter how busy life became, family and friends were always at Brenda's center. She poured her heart into being a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, mentor, and friend. Her husband, Loris "Butch" Longest, was her steadfast partner in all things. She was endlessly proud of her sons, Tripp Longest (Lee) and Greg Longest (Beth); and she adored her grandchildren, Caroline and Blake, who brought her constant joy. Brenda is also survived by her sister, Nancy Winn (Bob); her nieces, Christine Daniels (Graham) and Debbie Tosi (Emanuele); her nephew, Jim Gould (Jennifer); her cousin, Robin Harville; and many extended family members and friends who cherished her. Brenda's generosity defined her. She had a gift for making others feel special, remembered, and cared for. Whether it was finding the perfect present, dropping off a thoughtful surprise, or simply showing up when someone needed her most, Brenda expressed love through giving-and she gave with her whole heart. Many people have a story about a gift from Brenda that arrived exactly when it was needed. With a natural gift for hospitality, Brenda was happiest when she had a house full of people. Her beach house in Kitty Hawk became a place of gathering, laughter, and countless memories. She loved nothing more than hosting family and friends there, ensuring every guest felt welcomed and completely at ease. You were never left hungry. Always by her side was her beloved poodle, Willa, who brought her endless comfort and companionship. A longtime member of the Beta Sigma Phi service sorority, Brenda found deep friendship and fulfillment in serving others. The bonds she formed there enriched her life for decades, and she treasured them dearly. She was also a lifelong member of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, which her father helped build in the mid-1940s. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to VCU Health for their unwavering dedication to Brenda's care and to the compassionate staff at The Laurels at Bon Air for the respect and kindness they showed her during her final months. Their support brought immeasurable comfort. Brenda had served on the DLA Scholarship Foundation board of directors, which helps family members of DLA employees defray the cost of post-high-school education for students with high potential and financial need. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the scholarship fund at www.dla-foundation.org. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd., Chester, VA 23831. The Funeral service will be Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 11 a.m., at West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 2600 Wise St., Hopewell, VA 23860. Lunch to follow in the fellowship hall. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.

I am one of many who feel sadness at Brenda´s passing. She, and her family, are in my thoughts and prayers. I worked with Brenda on many projects at Bellwood and always admired her professionalism. She will be missed!

Brenda and the entire family has been in my life for more that 60 years since we first met at Bellwood (DGSC). We had many working years that has giving us many friends that stay in touch. We have often talked about and laughed about our trips we've had with retirees to NY, ski trips, Virginia Beach, Outer Banks, eating and shopping, and just enjoying our many conversations. Brenda has been the dearest friend anyone could have and she is in my heart forever.
