Burr Noland Carter III

March 18, 1953 - December 27, 2025

Died peacefully with his daughter by his side on December 27, 2025 of kidney failure after a long illness. His parents, Sarah Place Carter and Dr. Burr Noland Carter II, and stepson Finley Gayle Branch preceded him in death.

He leaves behind his daughter and the love of his life, Blair Mattison Carter; his beloved stepsons, David Marshall Branch, Thomas Cole Branch (Cole) and three siblings: Marian Worcester Carter (Polly), Edward Hill Carter (Ned) and Sarah Carter Grey, as well as two nieces and three nephews.

Nick, as he was known, was born on March 18, 1953 in Baltimore, Md., before the family moved back to Richmond, Va., in 1959.

He attended St. Christopher's School, and then boarded at Blue Ridge School for four years, graduating in 1972. He was a proud alumnus, who deeply valued his friendships and experience there.

He went on to attend the University of Arizona, graduating in 1976. At U of A, he made many lifelong, cherished friendships, developed a true love for the state of Arizona, the southwest and the Wildcats.

He worked for the Arizona Biltmore in convention sales for seven years while living in Phoenix before moving back to Richmond, where he worked in residential real estate.

Throughout his life, Nick treasured loyal friendships that spanned from Maine to California. These genuine friends were not limited to family and contemporaries. Stranger or not, everyone that he encountered was a warm friend for whom he deeply cared. He will be remembered for his love of family, his joyful spirit, his great sense of humor and endless generosity. He will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to convey their deep appreciation especially to Ofelia, Herute, Kim and Trivette at Belmont Village in Nashville for their friendship, love and heartfelt care. A celebration of his life will be held in Richmond in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blue Ridge School.
