Mrs. Carole Gilliam Hubbard, of Mechanicsville, fell asleep in Christ on the evening of Friday November 7, 2025. She was the beloved wife of David Millard Hubbard for 56 years, who preceded her in death on March 9, 2018.
Mrs. Hubbard was born May 13, 1941, in Maryland and was raised in Gaithersburg, forming lifelong friendships there. She attended James Madison University and met her future husband while he was a student at the University of Virginia. They married and eventually settled in Richmond where they resided until David's passing. Carole was a long-time congregant of both All Saints Episcopal Church in Henrico and Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville. She was also an active member of the Thomas Jefferson Garden Club and the Commonwealth Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Carole had a deep love of travel, cats, art, literature, and most of all, gardening. She cherished the VA Museum of Fine Arts, the VA Museum of History and Culture, the Richmond Forum, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, making them all her second homes. Carole continued to take trips whenever she could and regularly read on a variety of subjects while enrolling in classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Richmond until her late illness sidelined her. Like her father, she had a green thumb and had a garden and flower arrangements she was rightly proud of – she could be found working in her garden on many a hot summer morning. Above all, Carole had a smile for everyone and was quick to help a stranger and eager to greet a friend, old or new.
Mrs. Hubbard was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn Edd, and Katherine Elizabeth Gilliam, of Gaithersburg. Of great sadness to Carole and the family, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lorinda H. Butler (wife of Charles H. Butler), on Oct. 21, 2025.
Carole is survived by her son, David G. Hubbard (Cynthia); two granddaughters, Allyson Brooke Butler, daughter of Lorinda; Katherine Grace Hubbard, daughter of David and Angela Giglia Wright; and a step-granddaughter, Rhiannon Loraine Hatton, daughter of Cynthia. She is also survived by her dearest sister Judith Ann Gilliam Willard (Donald, deceased) as well as two nieces and a nephew, Amy W. Battaile (William); Andrea W. Wilson (Joseph); and Glenn G. Willard (Jessica).
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at Affinity Funeral Service, 8074 Mechanicsville Tpk. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 22 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 8209 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville. A private interment will be held in Hollywood Cemetery.
