Casa Bacot Obituary

Casa Huger Bacot

November 13, 1942 - May 16, 2025

It is with a heavy heart, the family of Casa Huger Bacot, née Haskins, announces her passing on May 16, 2025, at the age of 82 years old. Casa is survived by three daughters, Sarah Gibson Wiley (Edward James Wiley III), Dana Gibson Longenderfer (Mark Edwin Longenderfer), Tanner Gibson Neibert (Stephen Neibert); and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Leidig Gibson. Casa will be lovingly remembered by her 11 grandchildren, Ella, Coleman, and Sally Smith, Jack and DeWolf Longenderfer, Merritt, Lang, and Clare Gibson, Parker, Gibson and Keene Neibert. Casa was predeceased by her parents, Sarah Tanner Haskins, Robert Haskins, Jr.; and her son, Langhorne Gibson III.

Casa was born in 1942 in New York City during the days leading up to the pivotal World War II conference in Casablanca. An undoubtedly hopeful period in American history, Casa was born Sarah Huger Haskins, but she was known throughout her life as "Casa" after the fateful Casablanca Day connection, even naming her childhood family dog, Blanca. Casa was raised in Richmond, VA, attending St. Catherine's School and later, the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA, as a boarder. Casa met her husband of 29 years, Langhorne Gibson Jr. in Del Ray, FL, during spring break and with him raised four children in Richmond, VA. Following the birth of her fourth child, Casa returned to college at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she studied art and immersed herself in the vibrant arts community surrounding VCU. She became an award-winning artist and showed her work at Reynold's Gallery and 1708 Gallery amongst many other galleries throughout the years. An "abstract realist", her work has been in many public collections including the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, the former Bell Atlantic Corp. (now Verizon), Amvest Corp., CSX Corp., Hunton and Williams, and Ethyl Corp, among others. Our mother's creativity and capacity to love deeply overflowed into all the areas of her life. She had so many colorful and diverse friends whose presence in the Gibson household made life that much richer and more interesting for all.

After living in various parts of the East Coast from Maine to South Carolina, Casa spent her final years at Barclay at Tuckahoe, where she was cared for with exceptional kindness and compassion by a staff who truly loved her. Her family is deeply grateful to the entire team at Barclay, as well as Serenity First Hospice, for bringing comfort, dignity, and warmth to her final years, making them both special and meaningful. Her artistic and kind spirit emanated from her even at her advanced age. We will forever remember her for her slew of dogs, the sweet odor of turpentine and linseed oil, paint-covered blue jeans, and her eclectic but beautiful fashion and home décor choices. She was an artist to her core, and made an indelible impression on her children and grandchildren, and the many people who loved her.

Her memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 17, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are encouraged to the Shipley School, St. Catherine's School or the Alzheimer's Association.

This talented woman will always be remembered in this house. A few years ago I inherited a large rabbit painting from a dear elderly friend painted by Ms. Bacot. A true wonder with its thousands of colorful brushstrokes. Thank you for sharing your talent with those who didn´t know you personally, but can see your beautiful view of your world through your art.

Dear Sarah, Dana & Tanner,

I have fond memories of Casa from growing up as classmates at St. Catherine's, through the friendship of my parents and your grandparents, and also from my husband Tim's friendship with your father. Even so, I never knew the origin of her name! What a beautiful obituary and tribute to your Mother's rich life. I'm so sorry that I will be out of town for the summer and unable to attend her memorial service.

Sending love and prayers...Dabney
