Charles Clarke Obituary

CLARKE, Charles Franklin, known to most as "Charlie" or "Frankie," of Mechanicsville, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the age of 73. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Doris Clarke; and his brother, Ronnie. Charlie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marie Shiflett Clarke; his three children, Eddie Clarke (Jennifer), Michelle Smith (Bart) and Jamie Sims (Matt); his seven grandchildren, Andrea Gerloff (Frank), Taylor Clarke (Logan), Emily Clarke (Cody), Steven Smith, Layla Whitlock, Wyatt Sims and Waylon Sims; two great-granddaughters, Mackenzie Gerloff and Raelen Robertson; his five siblings, Junior, Roger, Rita, Margaret "Mickie" and Donna; his cousin and best friend, Keith Balderson; and many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was born and raised in Westmoreland County, graduating from Washington and Lee High School despite the many days he enjoyed skipping class. After graduation, he came to Richmond, where he became a firefighter for the City of Richmond, spending the majority of his career at Station 18 on Thompson Street. On his days not fighting fires, he built houses with his best friend, Gary Baker. After retiring as a firefighter in 2006 after 38 years of service, Charlie went to work at RV Services of Virginia for his best friend, Rusty Rhea. After retiring from the work world permanently, Charlie spent his time with his family and cat, "Princess."

The family wishes to express gratitude to Hanover Adult Center, Canterbury Rehab and Affinity Hospice.

A celebration of Charlie's life is being planned; details to follow. In place of flowers, please send contributions to the Alzheimer's Association at P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.

Frankie had many passions in life, Love he loved his family and his wife of 37 years Marie you rarely seen one with out the other. it was always hey Babe, Love you Babe, or Babe and it was always sealed with a kiss. There love was as strong as it was 37 years ago. His work ethic was so strong it would be hard for anyone to compete with, would hold down 3 jobs sometimes to support his family.

His love for family and friends was strong, he would give anything it took to make others happy, he loved helping others just so he could spend time with them. I have many memories of Frankie, one that stands out was in my teen years was the excitement he had when he first put the skiff over board that he built. Miss you Bud,will cherish all the memories we had together. RIP Frankie

Dad, I don't even know how to begin. It's been the longest 6 days of my life and I still don't think I have come to terms with everything that has happened. The love I have for you is undeniable. You will forever be in my heart. A little over a year ago I asked you if we could talk. I looked at you and said "please don't ever forget me". You looked back at me and said "I will never forget you Sis". I will hold onto that memory for the rest of my life. You will always be the first man I loved and I will always be your little girl. I take comfort in knowing you are whole again. Forever and always Dad!!
