Charles Fagan Obituary

Charles Emmett "Charlie" Fagan, II

September 21, 1940 - July 18, 2024

Charles Emmett "Charlie" Fagan II, 83, of Richmond, VA, passed away on July 18, 2024. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Fagan; his sister, Rose Marie Barker; and his grandson, Ethan Michael Upton. His good humor and pragmatism will be missed by his family and all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie and their five children, Chuck Fagan (Kathy), Debbie Sherrod (Graham), Patrick Fagan (Emily), Jamie Fagan (Jennifer), and Kathy Upton (Paul). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Keri Kelly (Paul), Kellie Fagan, Anna Catherine Sherrod, Taylor Sherrod, Caroline Fagan, Rebecca Fagan, Eric Fagan, Christian Fagan, Andrew Fagan, Braxton Fagan, Molly Kehoe, Carter Fagan, Cameron Upton, Jackson Upton, and Lillian Upton; and his great-grandchildren, Chase, Brynn, and Cade Kelly.

Born in Richmond, VA, on September 21, 1940, Charlie attended St. Benedict Catholic School and Benedictine High School. Charlie graduated from the University of Richmond (UR) in 1962 with a degree in accounting. While at UR, Charlie was a member of the Army ROTC, Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the golf team.

Upon graduation, Charlie served in the US Army with a tour in France and retired with the rank of Captain. Serving as Treasurer, he spent most of his career at Fidelity Bankers Life Insurance Company. He finished his career at APM Management. He also loved serving as a trusted tax preparer for friends and family.

Charlie was a long time high school football official taking pride in mentoring new officials. Known for his accuracy, Charlie was honored to have been asked to officiate three high school state championships. He retired as the game clock operator at UR Football games in 2022. He also served on numerous boards of directors including Our Lady of Hope, Spider Club, Richmond Country Club, Meadowbrook Country Club and St. Mary's Woods. Charlie enjoyed golf, fishing, picking crabs, and softball.

Charlie and Jackie were together for over 60 years celebrating their milestone wedding anniversary recently with a large party surrounded by friends and family. Charlie's devotion to Jackie and their family was unprecedented and their connection was unique and unmatched. In their retirement, they were faithful 5:30 p.m. Saturday mass attendees at St. Mary Catholic Church and loved going to UR football, baseball and basketball games. They cherished their breakfasts with the "McDonald's Crew" and Tuesday nights with the "O'Toole's Crew." He was very fond of reading the UR recruiting boards reporting his findings to Jackie. In recent years, they used simple tasks, such as running errands, as a way to spend time together and as a reason for a spontaneous lunch date.

The family would like to say a special note of thanks to the Fresenius Kidney Care West End for the wonderful care Charlie received during his seven years of dialysis.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Bliley's- Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd, Henrico, VA 23229.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Charlie's memory to ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, 5211 W. Broad Street, Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23230.

We still miss you, Charlie. I remember the first time we met Charlie. He drove me and Linny Powers on a golf cart tour of the grounds at Richmond Country Club. He was so proud of his club and enjoyed being the ambassador of hospitality.

Jackie,
Thinking of you and the family during this difficult time. I have no words of condolence that will give you peace other than I know your faith is strong.
I'm sure he and Linny are playing golf somewhere where every hole is a hole in one. Love, Tia Feria

My deepest condolences, Jackie & Charlie were my foster parents when I came to the University of Richmond as a freshman football player. They treated me like family. Nothing but love shown by the whole Fagan family.
