WINKLER, Charles Pinckney Sr. M.D., 92, of Richmond, died March 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joan Gilbert Winkler; his daughters, Kathryn W. Nicholas and Carol W. Lormand; his four grandchildren, Jamie Nicholas, Dylan Lormand, Charles P Winkler III and Jennifer Winkler; his identical twin brother, Dr. Mosley H. Winkler (Sharon); nieces, Kristy Zac, Adele Holmes, Ann Holbrook, Betsy Willis, Holly Morgan and Nancy Talaba; and nephews, Scott Roberts and James Winkler. Dr. Winkler was preceded in death by his son, Charles Pinckney Winkler Jr. M.D. (2010); his parents, James Louis Winkler and Adele L'Artigue Pinckney Pettijohn Winkler; his sister, Betty Roberts; and his brother, Robert Winkler.
Born July 30, 1930, in Ronceverte, West Virginia, he grew up in Ronceverte in his beloved and cherished Greenbrier County. He faced at the young age of seven the loss of his widely loved father "Jim". And as fate would have it, he lost his mother, "Adele" at the age of 11. He, his twin and older brother and sister would have been put and most likely separated in an orphanage if it weren't for the kind offer of their 69 year old great-aunt Elizabeth Hubbard "Lizzie." It was there they all finished their formative years and learned what perseverance meant.
Next, he and Mody attended Davis and Elkins College on scholarship for the first year of pre-med undergraduate studies and completed all requirements in just three years, the last two at Marshall University. His academic performance earned him acceptance to West Virginia University School of Medicine, a two year program and then transferred to Medical College of Virginia where he received his Doctorate of Medicine. After completing a one year internship in Charleston, West Virginia, he served as a doctor in the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon discharge, he continued his work in medicine as a General Practitioner, in southern West Virginia. In 1961, he was accepted as a resident at Duke University where he studied Radiology until 1964. His performance in his residency earned him an offer to work at The Curie Institute in Paris.
With a growing family, he decided to move back to Richmond and become the fourth doctor and founder of Radiology Associates of Richmond, where he worked until he retired in 1992. He was a fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR). Dr. Winkler was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond. Burial in Hollywood Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Virginia University Medical Alumni Association.
