Charlotte McCutcheon Obituary

MCCUTCHEON, Mrs. Charlotte Andrews, 95, died peacefully on February 22, 2022 in her home. Born on October 11, 1926 in Suffolk, Va., she graduated from Suffolk High School and St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, N.C. After coming to Richmond in 1949, she worked at Thalhimers and Eastern Airlines. Charlotte, an avid golfer, was an unapologetic liberal "Yellow Dog" Democrat with a firm opinion on everything that she willingly shared, unrequested. A vocal Episcopalian and a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Charlotte served on the vestry and altar guild. She was a 50-year volunteer at St. Paul's Lenten lunches, serving cheese soufflé on Wednesdays. She was a resident of Cedarfield from its inception. She served on the board of Family and Children Services, Theatre IV (now Virginia Repertory Theatre), SCAN, Gateway Homes and the Evaluation Committee of the United Way. She was a longtime member of The Women's Club and was active in the development of the West End Community Center. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by a daughter, Sallie Baker McCutcheon Johnston; two granddaughters, Catherine "Katie" Johnston and Julia "Julie" Johnston Oliver (Richard); two great-granddaughters, Sadie McTyeire Oliver and Elizabeth Shea Oliver; a great-grandson, Patrick Edward Oliver; a sister, Mary Jane Board (John, deceased); two sisters-in-law, Judy McCutcheon Smith (James) and Ann McCutcheon (Joe, deceased), all of Richmond. She was predeceased by her parents, Sadie and Charlie Andrews; one brother, Moody E. Stallings Jr; two sisters, Frances Stallings Ramsey and Sarah Andrews Fletcher; and by her husband, Andrew Haliday McCutcheon Jr., who was a sports columnist RNL, congressional aide, congressional candidate, campaign manager for J. Sargeant Reynolds and Vice President of recycling at Reynolds Metals.

Memorial service will be held on March 5, 2022 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Church, 1101 Forest Avenue, 23229. In lieu of flowers (she preferred chocolate in life to flowers at death), donations may be sent to St. Matthews Church, Virginia Rep. Theatre, 114 W. Broad St., 23220 or the Andrew McCutcheon Scholarship Fund at JSRCC 1701 E. Parham Rd, P.O. Box 26924, Richmond 23261-6924.

Sallie, I am sorry for your loss. I wish that I could have seen your Mom long before now. I am thankful for having known you all. Aunt Charlotte was a wonderful lady. I just know that Uncle Andy is there to give her a big hug and a kiss. I miss them both dearly.

For Sallie, Katie, Julie, Richie, Sadie, Elizabeth, and Patrick. Mrs. McCutcheon, "Nana" has completed her work and play here with all of you and now rests with her beloved Andy. She was an incredibly active, spunky, down to earth, loving lady, who was outspoken, witty, and comfortable to be around. Always impeccably dressed for the occasion, coiffed hair, makeup - she was beautiful inside and out. She loved you all immensely with her entire being. I know you will miss her and I also know she will forever watch over you. Hang on to your memories and great times and know that she is at peace and will see you all again on the other side.

Charlotte was my very first friend and became my "Richmond mom" when I moved to Virginia in 1984. She was a very close friend, best advisor, confidante, and never left my side!
I will miss her so very much; and our spirited discussions about literally, everything!
