David Pearce Campbell

January 28, 1936 - November 28, 2024

David Pearce Campbell, 88, of Richmond, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 28, 2024. He was the younger son of the late Luther Roy Campbell and Winifred Pearce Campbell, and was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1936.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Luther Roy Campbell, Jr.; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Campbell; and a nephew, Christopher Lee.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson Campbell; three children, Margaret Campbell Ullrich and her husband, Chris, David Pearce Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, and Winifred "Windy" Bartlett Campbell; five grandchildren, Tinsley Ullrich Moore, Anne Garland Ullrich, Caroline Christian Ullrich, Pearce Moncure Campbell and Jacob Wheless Campbell; two sisters-in-law, Frances Lee-Vandell and Peggy Talley Lee; four nieces, Alletta Bode-Griss, Frances Herrington, Ann Hays Cosentino and Karen Sonier; three nephews, Dan Talley, Tommy Talley and Richard Pearce; and his much loved dog, Barney.

David graduated from St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware. He earned a B.S. in Economics at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he was a member of the men's rowing team, St. Anthony Hall fraternity, and the Mask and Wig Club. After Penn, David graduated from the U.S. Navy Officers Candidate School and served three years in the U.S. Navy Atlantic fleet destroyer force, USS Lloyd Thomas.

Prior to his retirement in May 2024, David was a founding partner with Thompson Davis & Co. since 2002. At the firm, he focused his research on global logistics companies and his sales on logistics stock investments to institutional investors. He loved his work and his colleagues.

David started his career in investments in 1962 in New York City with the U.S. Trust Co. In 1965, he launched his institutional sales and research business with Vanden Broeck Lieber & Co.

In 1970, David relocated with his wife, Mary, and three children to Richmond to continue his career in sales and research with Wheat & Co. He was there until 1985, when he joined Scott and Stringfellow to help start its institutional sales department. David was involved in both corporate finance and research there until 2000, when he moved to Branch Cabell & Co. He continued in sales and research there until 2002.

A 47-year resident of Goochland County before he and Mary moved to Cedarfield in 2017, David shared his passion for nature with his children, raising chickens, ducks, sheep, ponies, rabbits, dogs, cats, and a wide array of birds, as well as an extensive garden. For 54 years, he was a dedicated member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry, taught Sunday School, and led the capital campaign to build a new church sanctuary in 1990. He was a member of the Carolinas Virginia Waterfowl and Pheasant Society and the Country Club of Virginia. His business career enabled him to form connections near and far. He had many friendships including those from swimming year-round as a "polar bear" at the CCV pool.

Mary was the great love of David's life, recently celebrating 61 years of marriage in November. Nothing gave David more joy than spending time with Mary, their family and his loyal and beloved dog, Barney. He and Mary enjoyed happy times with family and friends in their vacation homes in Jackson, Wyoming, and La Jolla, California.

The family is especially grateful for the love and support given to David by his wonderful caregivers, including Jean Godfrey, Paula Madigan and the care teams at Home Instead and Cedarfield.

A service to celebrate David's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 6th, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. A reception will be held immediately following the service from 12 to 2 p.m., at the Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Road, Richmond, VA 23238.

David's family will be forever grateful for his life. We will miss you and love you always, and your memory will endure.

I knew David from working with him professionally since the 1980s ... traveling with him to far-flung places in Europe and in the US ... visiting with him and the delightful Mary at their home in Richmond ... a most unusual man ... a gentleman of the old school, with utter integrity and goodness, yet great fun to be with, and professionally speaking, one of the best Wall Street analysts in the country. He will be genuinely missed but not forgotten.

As neighbors we shared many memories with David and his family across the country. Yes, our earthly loss is heaven's gain. Blessings to all who had the fortune of knowing him and will share in his memory.

I'm honored to have met Mr. Campbell just a few months ago. In the short time that we were together, over dinner and at Church, I could easily understand why so many people enjoyed spending time with him, as he was just a kind man and successful businessperson.

Dave was a great man. I have fond memories of working for him at Wheat then Scott & Stringfellow, planning his annual transportation conferences. But his family always came first in his life. Glad to read that he was able to do what he loved for as long as he did-a life well lived.
