David Clarke Obituary

David Wright Clarke

August 23, 1955 - October 16, 2024

David Wright Clarke, 69, a respected lawyer, beloved community member, and devoted family man passed away peacefully at home October 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born to Wallace and Dorothy Clarke in Midlothian, Virginia, David was a lifelong Richmond resident; he last lived in Church Hill overlooking his cherished Libby Hill Park. A proud alumnus of the University of Virginia, and University of Richmond School of Law, he was an avid supporter of Cavalier sports.

David was a leader and mentor in the legal and legislative community of Richmond. His career included significant roles at McCandlish Holton, LeClair Ryan, and Eckert Seamans. He was universally respected on both sides of the aisle for his intelligence, honesty, and infectious good humor. Throughout his career, he earned recognition from numerous local and national organizations. His humility kept his many accolades quiet, even from his family.

David's professional contributions were matched by his commitment to community service. He held leadership positions in local organizations including Orchard House School Board, Richmond Business Council, Richmond Christian Leadership Initiative, Leadership Metro Richmond, Virginia Oil and Gas Association, Chesterfield Food Bank, Urban Hope, Rise, and Friends of Bandy Field.

David's faith was a guiding force in his life, and he was an active member of several churches including Winfree Memorial Baptist Church, Church of the Good Shepherd, Third Church RVA, and East End Fellowship.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Clarke; his son, Alexander Norbom; and his daughter and son-in-law Emma and Clayton Alonso. He is also mourned by his siblings, John Clarke, Paul Clarke, and Beth Holt; and a wide circle of family, friends and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held at Third Church RVA on November 10, 2024, at 2 p.m., located at 600 Forest Ave, Henrico, VA 23229. The service will be streamed at live.thirdva.org.

In lieu of flowers, donations in David's name may be made to Urban Hope (urbanhoperva.org). Additionally, a fund has been established for a memorial bench and tree in Libby Hill Park (https://gofund.me/75cd9c65).

The family extends special thanks to Dr. Gergoudis, Dr. Stamatouli, Dr. De Jesus, Hospice of VA, and the nurses who provided compassionate care during his illness.

My sincerest condolences to the Clarke family. Back when I lived in Richmond, David and I became acquainted through Leadership Metro. What an intelligent, compassionate and delightful guy; saddened by his loss.

What a great, smart, and fun-loving cousin! He made a tasty old-fashioned. And he helped me locate a poison oak covered and tick infested Clarke family plot on what is now a golf course in Midlothian. He will be missed but remembered by many.

Pam,
My sincere condolences to you. David and I were law school classmates. Although I moved away from Richmond after law school, I always enjoyed seeing and catching up with David at our class reunions. He was a humble and gentle man and will be missed. My thoughts are with you and your children at this sad time. Jackie Maykranz Kraeutler
