David Hines Obituary

HINES, David Paul, 78, of Glen Allen, died at home on July 18, 2022 from complications of glioblastoma multiforme. He was born in Philadelphia to Philip Francis Hines and Jane Doud Hines Hatcher. David is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Liza) Acors Bruce, as well as daughters, Catherine Stuart Hines and Elizabeth Doud Paterson; son-in-law, Andrew Paterson; and grandsons, Cole Alexander Paterson and Levi Henry Paterson, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

David grew up working on the family farm near Aldie in Loudoun County. He was an industrious teenager, always interested in electricity and electronics. David graduated from Loudoun County High School and from the University of Virginia with a degree in electrical engineering. He then worked in information technology for his entire career. For the last 25 years until retirement, he worked at the Supreme Court of Virginia where his last position was Chief Information Security Officer.

David volunteered with the Fan Free Clinic and the Richmond AIDS information network. He was an avid cyclist for 20 years. He and Liza met bicycling and became friends through RABA (Richmond Area Bicycling Association). He was an amateur radio operator for 10 years and was a member of the Richmond Amateur Radio Club, K4HIN(SK). In retirement he joined and trained with Piedmont Search and Rescue. David was a member of Richmond Friends Meeting (Quaker), Baltimore Yearly Meeting, and he served on the board of Friends House in Sandy Spring, Maryland, for six years. He tutored countless young people in trigonometry and calculus and was a mentor to people with disabilities.

Known for his sense of humor, David had a wonderful wit. Joking and merriment came easily to him and remained part of his personality until the end. His capacity for love was tremendous. Liza felt she was the luckiest woman in the world to love David and to be loved by him. His tenderness, unwavering care, friendship, love and commitment to a happy marriage will be what Liza misses the most.

A celebration of David's life will be held at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to: Richmond Friends Meeting, Adult Spiritual Education, 4500 Kensington Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23221; VCU Massey Cancer Center's Neuro-Oncology Clinic, P.O. David was a good friend and a member of our Quaker Men's Group for many years. I shared a passion for bike riding with him; we went on several rides over the years. He could be serious, but he had a great sense of humor. I miss him.

Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting David while visiting Liza at their home in VA. I have had fond memories of Liza since working with her years ago, and had a very memorable dinner with David and Liza. As a bicycle hobbyist, I enjoyed their stories of riding together. My prayers are with both.

Dear Liza, Catherine, Elizabeth and family,
We are so sorry to hear of David's passing. Being neighbors for many years in Forestdale, we enjoyed many happy times as our children were growing up. David was always admired and known for his wit and intelligence. I remember him helping and tutoring my daughter in math when she was having difficulty. Our deepest sympathies and prayers to his family during this difficult time.
