David McGrann Obituary

David A McGrann

June 1, 1957 - May 3, 2025

McGrann, David A., of Bon Air, VA, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 3, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Naomi McGrann, and is survived by his wife of over three-and-a-half decades, Katy; children Maggie (Nicholas) and Naomi (Lindsey); brother John (Karen); and many extended family members and beloved friends. A graduate of Richmond College, University of Richmond, Dave was active in the University Student Union, helping to bring nationally recognized bands to the Robins Center, and had his own radio show on campus, introducing many obscure and "ahead of their times" labels to the student body. Following graduation, he spent over 30 years in banking and commercial mortgage management.

Dave was a man of vast, varied and eclectic interests, including diner, fine restaurant, military, and railroad china; The (P.G.) Wodehouse Society, where he was a staple during several conventions across the country; real and model trains; any form of auto racing, and sports in general; and any work of nonfiction, specifically presidential biographies and WWII topics.

He had an encyclopedic knowledge of subjects that interested him. For instance, he knew every building in Richmond and its environs that was a former grocery store or bank, at one point building a database with 20,000 entries. He was highly desired as a "Trivial Pursuit" partner.

Dave will be remembered for his quiet generosity, making donations to nonprofits dedicated to children, education, and literacy; buying friends air conditioners and making rent payments; sending gifts to friends and family, like Castlebury Hot Dog Chili Sauce and Edwards Country ham and bacon; and taking his children, in their youth, to most any dive club to hear a band, where he was known as "Polo Shirt Dad."

He was a curmudgeon with a quick wit, and he embodied kindness, generosity, tolerance, curiosity, and loyalty (unless you ticked him off). He did not suffer fools and was honorable to the core. Dave accepted people exactly as they were. He could converse with anyone, young or old, from any walk of life. He exemplified The Golden Rule and will be missed and remembered by those who had the good fortune to cross his path.

The family would like to thank the folks at Crater Community Hospice; though their time with Dave was brief, they treated him and his family with dignity and respect.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 2040 McRae Road, Bon Air, VA 23235, on Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. with reception to follow in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the charity of your choice, as long as it supports the common good.

I am so sorry for this incredible loss!

Insight and humor are 2 words that come to mind when I think of Dave. He seemed to know something about almost everything with a funny twist.

To a great buddy and former roommate; rest in peace my friend. I can only imagine that you´re going to be looking over your shoulder for both our Moms, the many tales of our misspent youth now exposed in eternity. Many fond memories. We´ll miss you Dave.
