David and I were classmates at Washington and Lee and worked together as proofreaders on the literary magazine Shenandoah. My favorite memory is of the time we decided to go to a fiddle festival in Pipestem, West Virginia. My wife, Sugar, and I didn´t have a car and the ever generous David offered to drive us. We drove through the night and when we reached Pipestem, slept uncomfortably in his little car. As the sun came up friends who played in an old time string band surrounded the car and Geology Professor, Odell McGuire, woke us up tapping on the windshield and telling us to get our lazy butts up and enjoy some music. I lost touch with David but saw him listed in the W and L magazine and found myself regretting that I´d never reached out, and moved to find that he was a writer and publisher and worked for a cancer center, none of which surprises me. What a fine human being. Miss you, David!

When David was a high school senior, we fell into conversation about The Big Questions of life, love, and the cosmos. He was so smart and articulate! While he was confident and knowledgeable, he displayed not a dram of arrogance. In particular, I was impressed by his knowledge of the ideas of Ayn Rand and by how he was so confidently able to speak about the work of this highly controversial intellectual, and to hold forth without any apparent fear of how he was going to inspire many people to condemn him for his views! This confidence of his is a display of real heroism! I recently moved back to Richmond after 50-some years away in New York as an airline pilot, and I was looking forward to renewing my friendship with David. Imagine my sorrow to learn that he has now so recently gone away to the Great Beyond. All great blessings on those he loved and who loved him.

I knew David in high school, and he impressed me as one of the brightest and most engaging bulbs I ever met.

Condolences to all his family. David and I worked together on the high school literary magazine and were involved in drama. We last spoke after he was a student at W & L and had recently returned from a year in NY publishing. He reported that he was somewhat taken aback by the amount of alcohol consumed over publishers' business lunches. We also debated the beginning of modern extistentialism. We both were probably mistaken but it was a decent discussion of the different approaches: David's advocacy for Nietzsche and mine for Kierkegaard. David was a quick thinker and delightful conversationalist. He had a kind and generous spirit that made him a wonderful friend.
