Edward Dinwiddie Obituary

DINWIDDIE, Edward Grant, We announce the death of Edward Grant Dinwiddie of Charlottesville, March 12, 2023. He had a full 92 years here with us and we hope he is now again enjoying hugs from his daughter, Anne and has been able to renew his decades-long argument with his mother-in-law over whose apples are better, New York or Virginia. He sure did love to stir the pot!

Ed was born in the Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville to Joseph Gray Dinwiddie and Frances Edward Grant Dinwiddie of Waynesboro. He loved telling the story of the day he was born, his parents were driving from Waynesboro to Charlottesville and his mother insisted on pulling over to one of the overlooks to watch the sun rise before proceeding on to Charlottesville.

He was a proud member of the Waynesboro High School Class of 1947, Randolph-Macon College Class of 1951 and UVa Darden School of Business Class of 1958. Ed spent four honorable years as a pilot in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and he never lost his love and fascination with all things aviation.

He worked for many years at Dawbarn Brothers in Waynesboro, EASCO in Baltimore and then finished out his business career at Darden. He decided to go into business for himself, when he and his wife, built, owned and operated the Trillium House Inn at Wintergreen.

Ed cherished his relationship with the church and was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville. He was a long-time Rotarian and Paul Harris fellow. Whatever organizations to which Ed belonged, the most important aspect for him was the realtionship that were made as evidenced in his monthly CAL Club lunches and deep friendships formed in the Bridge Group.

Second only to his love for flying, was his dedication and loyalty to UVa sports. Each of us has our own memory of attending a game with him and not being able to leave until the last player has left the field or court or diamond . . . rain, snow, complete upset by the other team . . . we would never leave early. Times which we endured, and now cherish.

His travels took him far and wide however, nothing compared to the over 50 years of summer family vacations at Wrightsville Beach. Tea time just won't be the same without him.

He will be remembered (often fondly) by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Day Dinwiddie, formerly of Westfield, New Jersey; his children, Ted and Renee Dinwiddie of Waynesboro, Will and Kristin Dinwiddie of Lovingston, John Penn Turner and Chris Bradley of Charlottesville; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Branch Dinwiddie, Anna Frances Dinwiddie, both of Charlottesville, Grant and Anna Dinwiddie of Stuarts Draft; and stepgranddaughter, Maggie Bargelski of Charlottesville. He was also blessed to have two great-grandchildren, George and Olive Dinwiddie. Also mourning Ed's loss is his last remaining sibling, his younger sister, Susan Dinwiddie Cline of North Carolina and a host of many nieces and nephews and their children.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville. Interment will be on his birthday June, 16 at Rockfish Presbytery Church, Nellysford, Virginia.

Contributions in memoriam can be made to: First Presbyterian Church – Building Together Fund, Randolph-Macon College Dinwiddie Family Scholarship, or the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. All addresses are available on their respective websites.

My condolences to the family. My father knew him well and went to school with him and was in Air Force with him also. Even I knew him from doing work at the Trillium House at Wintergreen. He was a great man.

My condolences to the entire Dinwiddie Family. Mr. "D" was always so kind and generous to me. I like to think he considered me his favorite "Hokie" (although those words never came from him). Ted, Anne, and Will had a great Dad to mentor and love them. God Bless all of you. - David Comey

Elizabeth, I´m very sorry to hear about Ed. I know he will be missed. I was amused about the reference of the apple feud with your mom. I´m sure she was waiting for him to continue that!

Betty and all the Dinwiddies
So many smiles today thinking of my many memories of Ed, especially at UVA baseball and women's hoops over the years, crossing paths around Wrightsville Beach, and visits at Rosewood. Such a joy to have known this wonderful man!
