Edward Lucas Obituary

Edward "Ed" Massenburg Parker Lucas

June 17, 1937 - December 14, 2025

With great sadness and much love for a life well-lived, Edward Massenburg Parker Lucas "Ed", of Mechanicsville, VA, was called peacefully to heaven on December 14, 2025, with his family by his side. He fought valiantly against many medical issues and had more bounce-backs than a cat has lives. Ed was born on June 17, 1937, to the late Woodard Parker Lucas and Earl Snidow Lucas, Sr., and was raised in Emporia, VA. Ed was the middle brother to Earl S. Lucas, Jr. (Lovie) and Jack W. Lucas. "The Lucas Boys" all died within the last 19 months. Following Jack's call to heaven in May 2024, Earl recently joined Jack on December 9, 2025, and Ed joined them five days later. Ed graduated from VA Tech in Business Administration and continued to be a proud Hokie. He served his country in the VA Army National Guard in Emporia. In 1961, Ed moved to Richmond and 41 years later retired from the VA Employment Commission in both the Tax and Financial Sections. Although Ed enjoyed his professional life, his favorite jobs were as husband and father. Ed married Barbara-Ann Kelly Lucas on August 5, 1967. They worked as a team in all they did in their 58 years of marriage. Family was most important to him. They were proud and loving parents to their children, Sean Lucas and Stacy Lucas Stephenson (Todd), as well as Little Eddie and Patrick, who bypassed time on earth and went straight to Heaven. Ed & Barbara were very involved parents and participated in many of their children's activities. In addition to their children, they took others under their wings. Ed and Barbara were one of the founding families of the Church of the Redeemer in May, 1976. Ed served in many capacities, as well as being President of the Pastoral Council in the formative years of Redeemer. He was very involved in Church of the Redeemer Council #11042 of the Knights of Columbus and the James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly 3066. Ed was faith-filled, diligent and had a strong sense of responsibility. He was a leader and an active participant in Church and the Mechanicsville community. Ed was always the Virginia gentleman and known for a twinkle in his eye and a big smile. His dry sense of humor, quiet manner and his ability to be level-headed were gifts that he brought to every situation. Ed was a good friend and had a large circle of friends that kept him very active in his retirement. Besides his immediate family, Ed is survived by the Lucas Family, nieces, nephews, cousins, the Church of the Redeemer Family, many close friends, and colleagues.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 18th, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 19th, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, or Church of the Redeemer, Knights of Columbus Council #11042 KOVAR, 8275 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
