Edward Phillips Obituary

Edward L. Phillips, Jr.

Edward L. Phillips, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully at his home on August 23, 2024, surrounded by family.

He was born on April 24, 1934, to Mr. Edward Lindsey Phillips and Mrs. Nellie Hawley Phillips of Durham, NC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied Geology. Eddie briefly served in the army and met his wife, Etsuko, while on assignment in Japan. They were married in October of 1970 and moved to Mechanicsville, VA, in 1971, where Eddie worked at Northeast Solite Corporation until his retirement.

Eddie loved spending time working in his garden whether it be tending to his roses, other beautiful flowers, or his vegetable garden with a variety of delicious vegetables including some of the best tomatoes you would ever have. He enjoyed cheering on his Tar Heels every ACC basketball season. Some of his favorite memories were spent with family in the Outer Banks where he loved to fish, read and relax with his siblings, nieces, and nephews.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Janice Phillips; brother-in-law, James Kennedy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in the death by his parents; his loving wife, Etsuko Phillips; younger brothers, Richard Phillips and James Phillips; sister, Elizabeth Kennedy; and sister-in law, Joan Phillips.

A graveside service will be held at Hanover Memorial Park Cemetery at 1 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Maymont Park: https://maymont.org/support/other-ways-to-give/tribute-gifts/.
