Edwin Kravitz Obituary

KRAVITZ, Edwin, 97, of Henrico, Virginia passed away December 30, 2023, at home peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was born September 22, 1926, in the Bronx, New York, to Simon and Hannah Kravitz. Edwin graduated high school early to join the US Army. He was sent to Germany to fight for his country in World War II. After the war, he stayed in Europe and continued to serve. While there, he was able to observe many historical events. He often spoke about being present during the Nuremberg Trials. In 2018, Edwin received the Bronze Star and other victory medals due to his heroic and valiant service.

He studied, as a young adult, to be a draftsman and ultimately was offered a job in Hopewell, Virginia, at Allied Chemical in 1960. He worked there for many years until his final employment with Dominion Power. He retired at the age of 70. At that time, only one retiree had been older than him.

In 1959, he met a young Irish nurse, Sheila, while dancing at a NY establishment famously named "Roseland." Nine months later, they were married in New York City and went on to have five children. He was always proud to mention he had five children in seven years and was able to raise one more in the years to follow.

Edwin Kravitz enjoyed spending time with his family, loved watching the NY Giants, going on quick trips, listening to show tunes, attending baseball games, reading the newspaper, and most of all, telling jokes. His ability to make others laugh was amazing. With his infectious laugh, a giving heart, mesmerizing charm, and an award-winning smile, it was certainly his gift to give to so many.

Edwin Kravitz was predeceased by his wife, Sheila, of 61 years in 2021. He is lovingly survived by his son, Kevin; his daughters, Maeve, Deirdre Langhorne (Tom), Kathleen Roddy and Kelly Bolvari (Steve); his grandchildren, Brooke Ratliff, Ellen Roddy, Jack Bolvari, Danny Bolvari and Katy-Scarlett Bolvari; two great-grandchildren, Cate Griswold and Charlotte Griswold; and niece, Ina Kaplan (Bobby).

Friends and family are invited to a Visitation on Monday, January 15, at 9:30am followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30am at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060.

Edwin Kravitz wished to have his remains donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program. He often spoke about giving his body to science hoping someone might find the secret to his longevity. His family knows part of that secret was daily exercise, a healthy diet, dancing and laughing as much as he could. All of these elements paired with his encouraging, positive attitude gave us 97 incredible years. Our joyous captain will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him!

I met Ed's beautiful family when I was a young girl because my grandmother, Nancy, began caring for Maeve in 1991. As you can imagine, and if you know the Kravitz, they became like family to us.

I aspired to be a nurse like my grandmother, so once I completed some classes, I began working for Ed by helping to provide care to his wife, Sheila. My mother, Pamela, also began providing care for them.
We all have the fondest memories of the times we spent with Ed, Sheila, and Maeve, with the added bonus of the rest of their magnificent family.

Ed's joyous disposition, even in the midst of the trials of life, will forever live in my memory and heart.
He loved to tell jokes; he was excited for me to play songs when I showed him that we could request our favorite jams on my phone's YouTube, he'd come right downstairs, and we'd dance around like a couple of penguins to "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" or sing Frank Sinatra and cause great big smiles from Maeve and Sheila. He simply just loved to make people happy.

What I can say most is Ed has greatly influenced my understanding of the love and joy we are called to share in this life. I'm grateful to have known him and to have also learned the true meaning of resilience from him.

My friend, I'll say it clear, I'll state my case, of which I'm certain,
You faced it all, and you stood tall,
Thank you for doing things your way!

We salute you, Captain Ed!

I met Ed Kravitz in 1992 on assignment for my company. What a privilege and joy to work for this kind man and his lovely family. To know him was to love him. His dedication, honor and duty to his country and family filled my heart with great admiration and respect. I was so grateful my granddaughter and I were able to attend Ed's Award Ceremony. I have so many warm memories of this witty, charming, delightful man and his family. What a precious gift to have known him for all these many years. May God heal our broken hearts.
My deepest sympathy to his dear family.

I was privileged to meet Edwin when he attended our Veterans Day celebrations at St Michael's Church. He was a joy to talk to, and I was impressed at how alert he was and how he recalled details from his service to our country. We honor his service and we will miss his smile at our upcoming celebrations. Condolences to his wonderful family. Dennis Huyck - Knights of Columbus Military Representative

What an "important"
life Cousin Edwin chose to live! He was intelligent, colorful, and always willing to share these gifts with extended family. His cousin Beatrice( our mom) would often drive us "down south" to visit Edwin´s remarkable brood. Warm memories of fun times in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown are some of our fondest. Cousin Edwin was a natural, talented group leader..We will forever admire his generous spirit.
Love u Cousin Edwin
