Frank Machen Obituary

Frank Hamilton and Janet Louise Clemans Machen

Frank "Spud" Machen (January 27, 1931 - January 4, 2021) and Janet Clemans (November 21, 1934 - September 8, 2025), met while in college and married on June 18, 1955, settling in Richmond. Frank worked many years for William H. White, Jr., Inc., Mechanical Contractors, retiring as Vice President / Projects Manager. Janet enjoyed working in the Eye Clinic at Children's Hospital. Through many family adventures they instilled a love of the water, camping, travel, history, and animals in their children.

Janet and Spud retired in 1996 to Northumberland County near the Clemans' family Great Wicomico River cottage. They enjoyed 10 happy years boating, gardening, fishing, maintaining oysters, and spending time with their family and many friends. In 2006 they relocated to Lake Monticello to be closer to family and were delighted to still have a water view from their home on the golf course.

Spud and Janet are survived by their children, Jeanne Machen and John Machen; grandchildren, Charles Moore (Brooke Mahanes) and Anna Borszich (Robert Borszich); great-grandchildren, Mary and David Borszich; Janet's brother and sister-in-law, George and Edna Clemans; and many other family members and friends.

A Memorial Service for Frank and Janet will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at New Bethel United Methodist Church (4899 Rolling Road, Scottsville) at 11 a.m. A graveside service will occur on Friday, November 7th at 11 a.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens.

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to RoseWood Village-Greenbrier for the care given to Janet the last four years and to the amazing team with Hospice of the Piedmont for their kind, loving support of Frank, Janet, and the entire family during their final weeks.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of the following organizations: Hospice of the Piedmont, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, or the Alzheimer's Association.
