Garrett Lockhart Obituary

LOCKHART, Garrett Falls, a beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away Monday, November 23, 2020, at the age of 30. Born in Richmond, Va., to Deb and Greg Lockhart, he was the brother of Colin and Chad. He attended St. Christopher's School through eighth grade and completed high school at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. He graduated with honors from The Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. Post graduation, he studied electronic music, which took him to LA, where he graduated from ICON Collective, an accredited school of music production.

Anyone who knew G (as friends and family referred to him) knew his laser focus when it came to learning something new. Tennis became a dawn to dusk activity when he was 12. His passion for the sport only increased as he attended the tennis academy at St. Stephen's. When the tennis coach at GWU told G that there were no open positions on the team, G challenged each player on the team and later played for the Division 1 team.

Court time faded, and he retired his racquets and took up music and taught himself Ableton music production. He played in small venues around D.C., often opening for headliners, pushing to later start times, an indication he was succeeding. At ICON Collective he learned the music production trade, mentored by several, including Dennis White, known by the producer name Static Revenger. G's first DJ name was Glock, the name he'd used through school as an email. After being called Glock or G-lock his entire life, he knew he was being recognized when he received a "cease and desist" letter from gun manufacturer GLOCK Inc. He changed his producer name to Fawks and wore a mask while performing, a nod to 17th-century radical Guy Fawkes. Ultimately he became known as i_o and was named "one to watch" by Billboard Magazine in 2018. He signed with Armada Music in 2020 and also maintained his own imprint, Label 444.i_o.

Garrett poured his whole heart and soul into every dream he pursued, and because of that gift, he is missed by so many he touched throughout this world.

Donations in his memory may be made online (Feedmore.org), sent to Feedmore, 1415 Rhoadmiller St., Richmond, Va. 23220 or to any local food pantry of your choice.

Happy birthday Garrett! Your music is still my absolute favorite and always will be! It´s literally just too good I think I´m still in the top .1% on Spotify. I still can´t believe a real human being created your music. So amazingly talented and such a kind person in the most true and intelligent way, even though I only met you once I could see this. Thank you for gracing me with your presence, it was truly a blessing to know you!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for allowing the world to hear his beautiful work of art that he worked on with lights. It brings me joy to hear music from him again and I am overjoyed you as a family blessed us with this privilege to hear Gs music once more. Thank you from myself and the rest of the community He brings joy and happiness to those who have never met him. That is how moving his music is to me and to many others. May Garrett rest in peace.

Finally getting around to composing this message.

I still think about your presence in the edm community. I don't think any artist can amount to the genius and talent your production had. Your ability to revive acid techno and bring it to LA will forever be a gift, and to have been able to meet you is an absolute treasure.

Much love to the Lockhart family.

I will always miss you. No words can describe how I feel about you no longer being here with us, but I will always cherish the memories you´ve made for me and allowing me to meet the people I´ve become good friends with. You and your music have definitely helped me get through some of my darkest days and I will always be grateful for that. Any dance floor I´m at, I will dance the night away for you because that´s all you every wanted was for us to dance our hearts out. You´ll forever in my heart and will always be in my thoughts, Garrett. 444ever.

I’ve never loved anyone like I love Garrett.
If you knew him, you knew how he was;
A Rubik's Cube of complexity and nuance and genius.

The impact he had on people’s hearts and minds was seismic.
The impact he had on mine is hitherto unparalleled.

He was the biggest muse I've ever met.
He drew madness out of me.
He also drew love out of me, and power
On levels that can only point towards the infinite and singular nature of the universe.

It is not an exaggeration to say that it is one of the honors of my life
to have been there for him,
to have made sense of the world with him,
to have made him laugh.

Deb, we only spoke once on the phone, for logistical purposes, but I think of you and Greg a lot and I’m with you.

G is with me every moment of every day. I have been wiping away the tears and celebrating him with stubbornness and perseverance that would make him proud.

Our censored banter will have to wait for when we meet again. I can’t wait for him to admit how right I was about everything.

Until then I can only thank him, and be mad at him, for setting the bar so high.

I met Garrett at the gym and he was one of the first people I worked with. Working with him made me feel welcome in an unfamiliar place. There was never a dull moment with him. His dark sense of humor made time pass so quickly. It's also notable that even on super hot days, there was Garrett climbing in his black skinny jeans. We went out to Barb's for a beer after work one night, went to a friend's house close by and he stepped in cat poop. Here was this cool guy stepping in poop. I'll never forget it. Another thing I'll never forget is how warm his hugs were. It was like being wrapped in pure love for a moment. I secretly really looked up to him because here was this guy working his way up to the point where he was touring and achieving his goals. Always working on music and petting dogs when he was at the gym. Damn Garthur... For the short amount of time I knew you, you were truly a gift. Sending love to your family and friends.

Below is a picture of you with Timothy the blind cat after he had pooped on that little girl.

Lockhart family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Garrett or as I knew him i_o, completely changed my life. I got to witness him perform in Austin in 2019 and I remember just being blown away. I got to see him perform one last time on November 15, 2020 shortly before his passing. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I think of him being gone all the time and still can´t believe it. Thank you for touching so many souls. May you Rest In Peace.

To the Lockhart family, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am and wish you all my condolences. Garrett, or as I only knew him, i_o, was someone I really admired. His music brought me out of my most painful days and I still listen to the art he created. Everytime I got someone else to love his art as much as i did i would tell them how Garrett was going to be a big! And he was! Bigger than life in so many ways and such an amazing individual that idk I could miss this much. Thank you Garrett for giving me music that gave me hope when I felt I had none. Rest in Peace now King. 444ever

I've never met Garrett before, and I've always wanted to see him DJ/perform live. I've been listening to electronic music for 20 years, and I can tell you that he was one of the most influential producers and DJ's of today. He has influenced me to push harder in the music studio, and in my own music production skills than ever before. Garrett changed my whole perspective on music production. I am going to miss hearing new releases form i_o that helped me get through COVID! May he rest in peace.
