Gary Donahue Obituary

DONAHUE, Mr. Gary Matthew, 84, passed away January 27, 2022. He was born on June 28, 1937 in Parkersburg, W.Va. to Thomas A. and Mary H. Donahue, who preceded him in death.

Gary graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1960. He worked for Reynolds Metals Company and then Alcoa from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. His work as a Packaging Engineer allowed him the opportunity to share his creative and artistic talents. He enjoyed his work and colleagues and valued his friendships. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Diana W. Donahue; his four daughters, Kelly D. DePew (John), Candace E. Andrie (Philip), Erin D. McCumber and Meredith P. Gavin (John). Gary had 11 grandchildren, Taylor, Peyton, Kelsey, Seth, Meredith, Miles, Bryce, Griffin, Kylee, Lane and Emerson; and three great-grandchildren, Ella, Jenson and Haisley; and one sister, Mary Jo Berry (Jack).

Gary loved to hunt and fish; he enjoyed whittling, playing the guitar, singing in his church choir and was once a member of the Richmond Barbershop Chorus. There will be a private burial and blessing with his immediate family.

When I think of Gary, I remember when he stopped at our house in Beverly, Ohio on his drive to Cincinnati where he attended college. He played guitar and we sang songs that my mom frequently played from her Kingston Trio album. I was in grade school and I think it was the first time that I actually saw someone playing the guitar, in person. I was mesmerized. Such fun. Through the years, I thought about that time often, because one of the songs was about getting stuck in the Boston subway and for the last twenty years, I worked in Boston and frequently took the subway. When ever the subway car stopped unexpectedly, I would think of us singing that song with Gary.

Gary always brought a level of excitement to just about any situation. Even something that might be mundane otherwise would be fun with Gary around. He had that great curiosity about how things worked. But unlike so many, he could figure it out and make it work better. No wonder he was drawn to design.

Diana, Children and Family I indeed have so many fond and lasting memories of working and traveling with, hunting and fishing and just plain laughing with Gary through our many years of working side by side at Reynolds´s Metals Company. He has remained a fond memory in my life that I have and will never forget. My condolences to the family for your loss that I share with you and I will always keep "Donahue" close in my cherished memories. Our shared friendship many years of working together remain secured in my mind forever. He loved his family and children and was proud to share in their adventures.

So sorry to hear of Gary´s passing. He was a classic. As a designer at Reynolds I working closely with Gary and loved his passion for his job and life. His stories never ended and most were hilarious. I will never forget his hands in the air, that ring spinning around his finger and him yelling "Well Geez" for extra emphasis. Great guy, great memories. Rest In Peace brother and go tell those stories.
