Gary Richard Evans

EVANS Gary Richard Evans, 62, of Richmond, died unexpectedly at his home in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., on March 27, 2007. Born April 5, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Gary was a son of the late Earl and Mary Jane Evans. A graduate of Bethel Park High School, he attended Davis and Elkins College, W.Va. and graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University. Gary began his professional career teaching and coaching basketball at both Surry and Amelia Academies. Following his work as an educator, he entered the insurance industry in 1971. After many years as an agent with Allstate Insurance, he formed Evans and Associates Insurance Company. The Evans-Brand Agency remains a legacy to him today. A longtime member of Meadowbrook Country Club, Gary was an avid tennis player and later enjoyed golfing with his close friends there. A transplant recipient, Gary became a strong advocate for organ donation. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Betty Martin Evans; and son, Erik Taylor Evans, both of Richmond. Gary is also survived by a brother, Ronald Evans (Gerri); and sister, Linda Kavka (Greg Kurnal); and Bryan (Lisa) Evans, Lindsay and Chris Kavka, all of Pittsburgh, Pa. Other Richmond family members include Charles (Jo Ann) Brown and Shan (Kris) Marchant. Charles and Martha Scoven of Richmond were like family to Gary for many years. Visitation will be held at Bliley Funeral Home, 6900 Hull Street Road on Friday, March 30, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please omit flowers.
