Gazelle Wilkes Obituary

WILKES, Mrs. Gazelle M., age 100, of Powhatan, passed peacefully on January 2, 2023.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Norman Wilkes. She and John shared a strong lifelong faith with their Jehovah's Witnesses family. They enjoyed many years in missionary servce all over the world and continued helping the Richmond and surrounding communities.

Gazelle is predeceased by her parents, Walter L. Merchant and Kate Murphy Merchant; and stepmother, Lois F. Merchant. Surviving siblings are Romy Merchant of Richmond and Marilyn Onorati of Amelia. Remaining siblings who have passed on before her are Walter G. "Garnet", Truman, Audrey, Grady, Gary and Wayne.

Gazelle's humble upbringing as a depression era farm girl cultivated in her a strong work ethic; clothing her with an internal strength, perseverance and a sharp wit that served her well throughout her 100 years. She enjoyed working hard and remained active her whole life, even up to just days before her passing.

A 2 p.m. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 4, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 3228 Buckingham Rd., Powhatan Va. Gazelle was a warm and cherished member of the Wilkes family and a very dear sister-in-law.

Gazelle was one of my favorite aunts. She was funny and quick-witted. She was such a strong and loving person.
I look forward to seeing her again with uncle John in the New System. It´s just around the corner!
