George Gregory Obituary

George Gregory, Jr.

June 28, 1951 - April 20, 2025

George Osborne Gregory, Jr., of Powhatan, VA, passed away suddenly at his home on Easter Sunday, 20 April 2025. He was predeceased by his parents, Gloria C. Gregory and George O. Gregory Sr.; and his younger sister, Gloria C. Gregory. George is survived by his sister, Susan G. Cella, and her husband, The Honorable Paul W. Cella; his son, Gray W. Gregory, and Gray's wife, Kelly, along with their daughters, Madison and Charlotte; and his daughter, Elaine C. Gregory, and her fiancé, Zach Mayo. Born in Richmond, VA, on June 28, 1951, George's childhood home near the James River was surrounded by wildlife. This instilled in George a lifelong love of nature that was the impetus for countless camping and canoe trips, both pleasurable and otherwise. With George's same fondness for the outdoors came an eager willingness to nurture its young, wounded or sick woodland residents back to health. It was not unusual at the Gregory home to find the bathroom occupied by raccoons, owls and various other animals. George attended Huguenot High School, where he excelled in wrestling under the demanding guidance of Coach Larry Hoover and forged lifelong friendships. He later attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) and went on to earn a Master's degree in Business Management from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Professionally, George brought his keen eye for design, methodical problem-solving, and meticulous attention to detail to construction and renovation projects across the country. He led each one with patience and care. After George's well-earned retirement, he eventually moved to Powhatan where he became an instant and valued regular at numerous popular county establishments. George's calming manner, cheerful disposition and ever present willingness to help will be sadly missed by many. His friends, his family and the many people who benefited from his numerous skills and generous nature are too numerous to list.

A celebration of George's life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at The County Seat Restaurant, located at 3883 Old Buckingham Road in Powhatan. All who knew and loved George are welcome.

George was a great friend all through school. We lost touch when my dad was transferred and only briefly reconnected several years ago but it was wonderful. The world has lost a great person!

"Ozzie" was a gentle giant. He was a humble and generally quiet man. However, when he did choose to share a few thoughts, they were always well thought out and worth hearing.

Did not know George, Jr. but knew his dad who worked with me at Mortgage Investment Corp. I'm sure his son was a thoughtful worker just like his dad. Condolences to the remaining family. I remember the racoons (many) which visited his house on the river every afternoon for the cookies...
