Gregory Marbold Obituary

Gregory Marbold passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Greg was born March 21, 1962, in Springfield, Illinois, to Henry "Hank"; and Lola Brawner Marbold. He graduated from Lanphier High School and went on to earn a business degree from the University of Illinois. Greg worked at SuperValu for more than 30 years and retired from his role of VP of Sales for the Eastern Region in 2019.

Greg and Karan, his wife of 38 years, met when they interviewed for the same job at a communications company. Karan got the position, but the company liked Greg so much they offered him a different role. Although Karan initiated their first date, Greg fell for her quickly and began immediately asking for her hand in marriage. Karan said yes to Greg's fourth proposal, and they married soon after. They exchanged vows on three occasions: once in Springfield in 1985, again in Douglasville, Georgia in 1997, and lastly in Richmond, Virginia on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in 2010.

Their daughter, Anne, was born in 1986, and their son, Joe, was born in 1989. Greg's world revolved around his family, and he always kept them protected yet entertained. His love for them was undeniable, and they will forever hear his high-pitched TV-watching laugh.

A big sports fan, Greg loved watching Georgia Bulldogs football and Fighting Illini basketball. He was an avid and competitive golfer. When his son, Joe, was in the seventh grade, the two played in a father-son golf tournament that ended up with Greg falling into a lake while trying to make a shot. They didn't win. Greg even took boardgames seriously, as his family recalls one Christmas when he solved an impossible game of Clue, only to realize he'd "accidentally" hidden cards under the board.

Greg is survived by his wife, Karan; daughter, Anne; son, Joe (Lindsay); three sisters, Margie Sharick, Cindy Wanless, and Robin Weakly (John); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bradley Marbold, James Davis II, Henry Marbold, and Terry Davis; and sisters, Connie Clark and Georgene Esper.

Anyone who knew Greg can attest that he was always ready to lend a hand or tell a joke-then another, and probably another. Greg will be tremendously missed, but we imagine he's playing endless rounds of golf and visiting wineries in between.

We will celebrate Greg's life on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church: 909 Rennie Ave, Richmond, Virginia 23227. All are welcome to attend.

I have just learned of Greg´s passing.

Greg was my good friend and business fellow. We shared a passion for business and we´re always ready to share new learnings and applications.

Greg would golf scratch when he wanted to be kind....although he could destroy me on his worst day.

I will miss Greg.

GOD Bless you Greg.

Our condolences to Greg´s family.
Greg was my supervisor and mentor and friend. We worked together in the GM/HBC Department at Supervalu for many years. I remember the Christmas parties he and Karan hosted. My husband and I felt welcomed. We enjoyed the time spent with them. You will forever be in our hearts.
May you rest in peace

Worked with Greg at Supervalu until I retired in 2016. Great guy that cared for the people he worked with, and tried to make the workplace a better place each day. Passed away to young and will be missed by everyone that knew him. Condolences to the family that will miss him the most of all.
