Gus Elmore Haynes

HAYNES, Gus Elmore, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 12, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and Roy Haynes; brothers, Morris, Preston, Ray, Charles, Paul and Hugh; and sisters, Elizabeth and Peggy. He is survived by his wife, Janice Dunkum Haynes; children, Wayne (Susan), Vicki (Rick), Tricia (Will) and David (Liz); grandchildren, Kristen (Allen), Lauren, Jessica (Robert), Taylor (Steph) and Evan; sister, Ella Plunkett; and several beloved great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gus was a member of Fort Lee Baptist Church. He served 27 years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Gus was also a member of the VFW #98, the Sandston Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #144. Gus was happiest when surrounded by family and food and was the grandpa who always had M&M packets hidden in his shirt pocket. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. A funeral service will be held Monday, February 21, at 12 noon at Fort Lee Baptist Church, 2727 Charles City Road, Richmond, Va. 23231. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
