Hannah Elizabeth Smith Cox

1932 - 2022

COX, Hannah Elizabeth Smith, departed this world on December 14, 2022.

Known to most as "Betty," Hannah was born on a farm in Warsaw, Virginia on January 30, 1932. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Julia Walker Smith and Everett Allerd Smith; her five older siblings, Isabelle, Sarah Jo, Julia, Mary and Everett; her husband of 64 years, Bill; and son, John.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan Beirne (Jimmy), Debbie Mills (Larry), Jane Markow (Ted); and seven grandchildren, Colin (Merrill) and David Beirne, John (Annabelle), Henry and Hannah Mills and Reid and Will Markow. She also leaves behind several nieces, a nephew and their families, as well as her beloved caregivers, with special mention of Danise, Sabine, Jean, Stephanie, Melissa, Habibah and Sylvia.

Betty worked most of her adult life in the banking and insurance industries. She was a wise and strong woman of many talents and skills, which included cooking, canning, sewing, furniture-finishing, boating and stretching a dollar. Hard work, kindness and a genuine interest in people were her most outstanding gifts. She loved unconditionally and was entrusted as a confidant, by many. She always put others' needs before hers and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She trusted people and made lifelong friends easily. She enjoyed a full life in her home on Grove Avenue where neighbors are family and family are friends.
