RAINEY, Hartwell Thomas "Tom", IV, age 64, of Richmond, passed suddenly on October 10, 2021 after a courageous fight with COVID-19. He was preceded in death by his father, Hartwell Thomas Rainey III; and his mother, Faye Galaspie. Tom is survived by his siblings, Mark (Kristin) and Crystal; his children, Megan, Alex, Hope and Hart; his grandchildren, Peyton, Addison and Luka; nieces and nephews, Chelsea (Jason), Linsey, Mark, Haley, Logan and Reaghan; and beloved soulmate, Barbara. Born in Richmond, Tom spent his lifetime in and around the metro Richmond area. A graduate of the University of Richmond and longtime IT executive at Interbake Foods, he made many friends in this community he considered home. A loving father and grandfather, Tom's stories nearly always revolved around his children, grandchildren and their accomplishments. With a laugh that could fill a room, Tom cherished family gatherings and making memories with friends. Tom most loved spending time on the water, fishing and with his grandchildren. A devout Christian, Tom practiced his faith in his day-to-day actions. His belief in a heavenly afterlife is providing comfort to everyone who loved and will miss him. Tom was kind, supportive, loving and compassionate to those fortunate to know and love him. He was readily available to listen and had an innate ability to send kind messages to friends and family when they were needed most. The family will receive friends on October 16, 2021, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bliley's – Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A private interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Reel Recovery, a national nonprofit that provides free fishing retreats for men living with all forms of cancer. Tom knew both cancer and the joy of fishing and donations in his honor would allow his peace on the water to continue.

Tom was a great friend and we will always remember him as a kind hearted person who would do anything for you. He always had a kind word no matter the situation and was incredibly funny. He was also one of the smartest and most talented programmers I ever worked with and on top of that an incredible father. He will be missed
