Hattie Shocket Obituary

Hattie Shocket

June 6, 1923 - August 25, 2024

Hattie Tabakin Shocket of Richmond, VA (1923-2024) died on August 25, 2024, at the age of 101. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Carrie Tabakin; her husband, Will Shocket; sister, Betty Levine; and brother, Ralph Tabakin. She is survived by her children, Joseph S. Shocket (Mae), Linda Chase (Greg), and Abraham L. Shocket (Clare). She is also survived by grandchildren, William Chase, Rachel Shocket, Stephen Shocket, Carter Shocket, and Frederick Shocket.

Hattie was born in New Orleans on June 6, 1923. The family moved several times, eventually locating on Pine Street in Richmond, VA and then Floyd Avenue. She graduated from the old John Marshall HS, then attended Richmond Professional Institute (VCU today), receiving a Bachelor of Science in the Social Sciences. Following college, she worked a year in a Boston hospital, returning a year later to Richmond. I suspect she did not care for the Boston winters.

She was a lifetime member of the Jewish Women's organization, Hadassah. As an officer in the 1940's one of her functions was to arrange for speakers at their regular meetings. One day she called a promising speaker candidate to see if he was available. The gentleman was about to walk out the door en route to a trip to New York. Something made him turn around and answer the phone. His name was Will Shocket. As fate would have it, one thing led to another, and they fell in love and married in 1949.

Hattie's life was one of fellowship and volunteerism throughout the community, achieving much recognition for her efforts as follows: The Gila Chapter, B'nai Brith Women Sofie Stahl Memorial Award May 24, 1994, Jewish Family Services Volunteer of the Year October 20, 1994, the Virginia Association on Aging 2001 Outstanding Volunteer Services to Senior Citizen Award October 16, 2001, the Henrietta Szold Group of Hadassah Woman of the Year 2002. She was also a long-time member of Temple Beth-El.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Virginia for making her final days more comfortable and Care Advantage caregivers: Natasha Thorn and Robin Underwood for being with her in her final days. Most importantly, a world of thanks to long-time caregiver, Pamela Reed, her fulltime rummikube partner, chauffer to the JCC and other locations. Pamela came to love her as a sister and mom. Also, many thanks to Rita and Becky for their devoted friendship to Hattie.

A funeral service will be conducted at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230 on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, VA 23222. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Temple Beth-El, 3300 Grove Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221 Online Payments - Temple Beth-El (bethelrichmond.org).

Linda, it is Cliff Singer. Sorry to see of your mother's passing. My mother and yours grew up together, as did we. Also my Aunt Dubby Winer was her good friend. It was nice seeing her at Temple so often! Your mother was a wonderful person.
