Hazle Konerding Obituary

KONERDING, M.D., Hazle (Smith), 76, entered eternal rest on June 17, 2024. She was born in Fairbanks, AK, on October 18, 1947, where her parents, Dewey S. and Evalyn M. Smith were civilian employees of the Army during the early Cold War years, developing Ladd Army Air Field. In 1955, the family moved to Fort Walton Beach, FL, where her father continued his civil engineer profession building more runways, this time at Eglin Air Force Base. She graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1965. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and after graduation in 1969, attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, graduating with honors in 1973. Following an internship at the Florida Hospital in Orlando, she completed her Dermatology residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1977. She was Assistant Professor of Dermatology at MCV for three years before beginning private practice in Richmond as Founding Partner and President of Commonwealth Dermatology, a position she held until her retirement in 2021. To her patients she was a beloved, compassionate and trusted healer; she loved her patients with all her heart and they returned that love many times over.

Hazle became a physician in an era when few women chose to enter medicine, much less seek leadership positions. She was one of only 11 women in her medical school class at UM. Dr. Konerding was active in organized medicine and a strong leader on the local, state, and national level for more than four decades. She was a member and also past President of the Medical Society of Virginia, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Virginia Dermatological Society, and the Richmond Dermatological Society, and remained in leadership and advisory positions in these organizations until her passing. She served multiple terms as an MSV Delegate to the American Medical Association. As a member of the American Academy of Dermatology she was Chair of SKINpac, its national lobbying organization. She also served on the Boards of Directors of Access Now, the MSV Insurance Agency, Bon Secours Richmond Health System and the Henricus Foundation. At the time of her death, she was President of West Richmond Rotary Club. She was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, Yankee Point Yacht Club (Lancaster County), Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Richmond Woman's Club. She was a long-time member of All Saints Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry, Altar Guild, and Choir and as an Episcopal Lay Minister.

Hazle was known to all for her impeccable sense of style and her almost endless collection of shoes. She was a fiercely loyal friend who maintained close and loving ties with her bridge club friends from her first days in Richmond until her passing. In addition to bridge, she enjoyed collecting oyster plates, Japanese netsukes, scrimshaw and other decorative items. She was an insatiable reader of murder mysteries. She had a passion for traveling the world, setting foot in over 80 countries and all seven continents as well as cruising all seven seas. Her skills as a gourmet chef were unsurpassed and an invitation to partake of a meal she cooked was never refused.

Hazle is survived by her husband of 55 years, Karsten F. Konerding, M.D., whom she met when he served breakfast to her in her freshman dormitory at Northwestern (he, obviously, was smitten!). She is also survived by her daughters, Julia K. Padgett, M.D. (A. Vaden Padgett, M.D.), of Goochland, and Linda K. Montgomery, J.D., M.H.A., of Charlotte, N.C.; and her grandchildren, A. Vaden Padgett II, Anna Grace Padgett, Caroline Louise Montgomery and Charles Otto Montgomery; and her brothers-in-law, Erhard F. Konerding (llana), of Middletown, CT, Dr. Med. Achim Konerding (Gabrielle), of Seesen, Germany, and Dr. Med. Jurgen Konerding (Susanne), of Gottingen, Germany.

Her greatest joy in life was her family and close circle of dearest friends. She was an inspiration to her daughters, who learned from her that a woman did not have to choose between motherhood and professional success, nor take a back row seat when told that girls just didn't belong in leadership. To her grandchildren she was the most supportive and loving grandmother there could be. We will all miss her deeply, she was the bedrock and foundation of our family. She will remain an inspiration to succeeding generations even in her absence, her example a guiding light.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Friday, June 28, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at The Country Club of Virginia Westhampton clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation, 2924 Emerywood Parkway, Henrico, VA, 23294; Access Now, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Henrico, VA, 23294; or All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, Henrico, VA, 23229.

I just learned of Hazle's passing from Dr. RD Hall, who was kind enough to send me this obituary. Hazle and I were in the same residency class at MCV and she was a friend. We had a close residency group and many of us would find time to meet for dinner, and talk of old times, at some point during AAD meetings. I have fond memories of that group and she certainly was a large part of that.

Hazle was a sorority sister of mine at Northwestern University. We met freshman year, when we lived on the same hall in our freshman dorm. I saw her last about 10 years ago when some of us from the class of 1969 met in DC. Karsten accompanied her, and all of us had a great time. She was part of a Facebook group of fellow AOPs from Northwestern. We just learned of her death from an enterprising fellow sorority sister, and we all are devastated. We enjoyed reading her beautiful obituary and learning of her amazingly full life. Sincere condolences to Karsten and Hazle's family and many friends. We too will miss her.

Dr Konerding was my doctor for over 20 years. We were not too far apart in age and always talked about our kids and grandkids. It was a pleasure to see her. I can still hear her heels clicking down the hallway coming to my room. She was a great lady. God bless to the family. Julie Matthews

Dear family of Hazle- I am so sorry to learn of her passing- my deepest condolences. We went to NU together both staying in Willard Hall as freshmen and then, both pledging AOPi. I´m sure we played hundreds, if not thousands, games of bridge during that time. I don´t know whether we showed any improvement but we had a lot of fun.
After graduation, I don´t think we met again until a reunion in Evanston and I was very impressed with her achievement and determination, and yet, the same Hazle- funny and loveable and dry.
We had recently reconnected via
FB and I enjoyed her delight in her girls. It seems she did have a wonderful life and is hopefully enjoying that same situation in her new one. Love the photo-she was lovely.
With Sympathy, Susan Keeley

My condolences to Dr. Konerding's family, friends and others that knew her. She was my Dermotologist, as well as my daughters. She diagnosed my Melanoma, and most likely saved my life. She will be forever in my heart.

Hazle and I met at the AOPi house at Northwestern in 1966 and were in each others weddings. We both went to medical school, married other med students, raised families and practiced in our areas of medicine for many many years. We had lost touch, but were able to reconnect at Norhwestern Med Scool 50th anniversary reunion in 2022 after the pandemic. We visited again in Richmond at her home in the fall of 2022. I will miss her laugh. I´m so sorry to hear she´s gone.

To an exquisite lady, that was gracious enough to share some of her travel experiences with me. She had a beautiful soul & heart, with an adventurous spirit. I loved that about her, as I traveled when I was younger. Even though I am unable to do so now. I have been a patient of hers for numerous years. I have never missed an appointment.( I never wanted to) except when I was in the hospital. Loved her dearly. I do remember her boots with the spikes on the heels, they were my favorite that I saw in her wear in the office. Patricia Elko

I am deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of this extraordinary, lovely woman and brilliant dermatologist.

I initially met Dr Konerding in the summer of 1981 when I was in my mid 20's and has developed adult acne. I'll never forget her kind, caring, compassionate demeanor. First question was " Hi Susan, what can I do to help you today?" I said " Dr Konerding, I'd like you to help me achieve skin as beautiful as yours!" Dag gone, in time, I came to have beautiful skin too! I have a rare dorm of a genetic disease. I was stunned she knew as much as anyone I've seen over now 45 yrs at John's Hopkins and in NYC about my disease. She was a beautiful lady inside and out. Best dermatologist on the planet too. I am a health pro myself ( retired). We held the most wonderful conversations about health care, the insurance industry, the evolution of medicine, our love for the water.

I was deeply upset calling the office a few yrs ago and hearing she had suffered a stroke but thrilled to hear the office staff tell me when I arrived for my appt with one of her colleagues she had visited the office the week before and was improving.

To her husband, I cannot imagine the great loss you have suffered as well as your children, their spouses and your grandchildren. What a gem she was as one fine woman and dermatologist. I deeply regret I am unable to attend the Memorial service for Dr. K. due to serious illness. Each of you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm heartbroken and share your sadness in the loss of this dear, fine, extraordinary lady. May the Lord wrap Hus loving arms around you and comfort you with love and peace. My heart is with you.

Hazle was NOT my dermatologist, but after two separate skin procedures I had last December, she took a personal interest in me during the healing process from our shared activities at All Saints Episcopal Church. I admired her as a lay miister and fellow choir member there, and I will sincerely and deeply miss her presence there; it simply won't feel the same. God Bless you and keep you until we meet again, Hazle.

Karsten and family, My prayers and thoughts go out to you. Hazle was one of a kind and always an inspiration to everyone. I worked the polls with her about a few years ago and had a great chance to catch up. Her love of being a grandmother was such a joy to her and her family was always a priority. Cherish all the memories.
