Irene McGovern Obituary

Irene Anne McGovern

June 8, 1949 - October 2, 2025

Irene Anne McGovern (nee Fluckiger), 76, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, from complications of aggressive lung cancer. Irene worked as a Certified Dental Assistant Instructor for 4-Handed Dentistry at the VCU School of Dentistry for 20+ years where she made lifelong friends. She was fierce and opinionated and had a heart that could encircle the world. Irene loved her family, shopping, and Christmas (and especially the intersection of the three). If you were looking for something, all you needed to do was call Irene and she'd tell you exactly where to find it in Richmond. Her holiday table centerpieces were always beautiful and unique. She was fascinated by Victorian England and ancient Egypt and had so many places from her bucket list left to visit. Her presence is already deeply missed.

Irene was the second child of Fred and Sonya Fluckiger (deceased), and was the widow of Kevin J. McGovern. She is survived by her sisters, Karen F. Austin and Amy Fluckiger; her nephew, Taylor B. Austin; and niece, Rebecca Hunsaker. Her memorial service will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers or food, please consider making a donation to Toys for Tots or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Irene was like the sister I never had. We first met at work and became fast friends whenever I needed anything she was always there. You always knew where you stood with her. She made such an impact on so many students at the dental school. After she retired we remained close, seeing each other and talking often. I will miss you my dear friend now you are reunited with Kevin flew high.
