Jacqueline Viener

VIENER, Jacqueline, 101, died peacefully Monday evening, December 12, 2022, with her daughter at her side.

We celebrate the long and fruitful life of a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving her are daughter, Helene Viener Schuck (Philip); grandson, Joseph Philip Sowerby (Courtney); and her greatest joy, great-grandchildren, Amelia Ellyn and Robert Douglas Sowerby; also daughter-in-law, Sharon Estridge. Jacqueline's husband, Saul died in 2006 and her son, Philip Stuart in 2018.

Jacqueline was born in 1921 to Reka and Joseph Wolman in Manchester, England. She had two younger sisters, Ruth and Blanche. Her father moved the family from Manchester, England to Cork, Ireland and later to Brisbane, Australia. While in Brisbane, during World War II, she met a young American Naval Lieutenant. They married in Brisbane and returned to Richmond, Virginia at the end of the war.

Jackie became an integral part of the Richmond community. She was an important member of several organizations: NCJW, JCFR; she served as President of Jewish Family Services; President of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Women's Council; and was also part of the initial creation of the VMFA Shop.

One of Jackie's major contributions was her development of support services for children's hospitals in both Richmond and Atlanta, Georgia. Through the years, she was recognized with multiple awards for her work.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of the following: Temple Beth Ahabah Archives Saul Viener Fund, the Child Development Center – Westminster Canterbury Richmond, or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Youth Library.

A graveside service will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 19, at the Hebrew Cemetery, with a service to follow at 11 a.m., at Westminster Canterbury in the Sanctuary Spiritual Center.
