James Crichton Obituary

James Stone Crichton Sr.

January 6, 1932 - October 21, 2025

James "Jim" Stone Crichton Sr, known lovingly as "Pop" to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on the evening of October 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 93 years old.

Born in Lawrenceville, Va., on January 6, 1932, to Laura Thomas Crichton, Jim lived a life marked by faith, service, and devotion to family. He grew up alongside his brother, David Crichton, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.

Jim attended Hargrave Military Academy before enrolling at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech), where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and the Cotillion Club and played on the freshman football team for the Hokies. His time at VPI instilled in him a lifelong pride in the university and its traditions; he remained a devoted supporter of the Corps of Cadets throughout his life.

A proud veteran, Jim served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service, he built a distinguished career at Philip Morris USA and International, where he worked his entire professional life and ultimately served as Vice President and Director of Special Projects.

Jim was a man deeply rooted in Virginia. He built his family in Midlothian, where he lived for decades. In his later years, he made his home with his daughter, Dorsey, in Powhatan, and spent cherished time with his son, Jamey, in Richmond. He also loved his peaceful days at his lake house on Lake Gaston, where he gathered with family and friends.

A faithful Christian, Jim was an active member of Salisbury Presbyterian Church, where he found joy and fellowship. He also enjoyed the outdoors and his time with friends at his hunt club, The Good Old Boys From Lawrenceville.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Nash Crichton, with whom he shared a long and loving marriage. He is survived by his children, Laura Dorsey Crichton ("Dorsey") and James Stone Crichton Jr. ("Jamey"); his brother, David Crichton; his grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Johnson, Samuel Nash Johnson, Stella Noble Crichton, Lucy Stone Crichton, Jonathan Caswell Crosthwaite, Polly Moore Crichton, and Clara James Crichton; and a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly.

A funeral service will be held at Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Virginia on January 10, 2026 at 11 a.m.

Jim's life was a testament to quiet strength, steady faith, and the power of love shared generously with family and friends. His memory will live on in the stories told at the lake, the laughter of his grandchildren, and the enduring example he set for all who knew him.

It´s with deep sadness I read this. We were friends for years, especially through the many activities at Salisbury Church. We were still in Virginia when Anne passed. Had many laughs together, as they both had a terrific sense of humor. Please accept our sincere condolences from us. I know he is laughing it up with Anne in heaven. Warmly, Phyllis And Juhani Karhatsu. (Steinbach)

Jim and my husband worked together at Philip Morris for many years. Jim was in our home on many times in those early years. He was a lovely, lovely man and a true friend. So glad he had a happy life!

I knew Jim at Philip Morris and in retirement at our ROMEO breakfasts. The ROMEO´s will remember and miss him. He was always happy and smiling and full of energy. Our condolences to his family and friends.
