James Davia Obituary

James E. Davia, MD

September 17, 1937 - January 2, 2025

Preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth, in 2006, and by his wife, Elaine, in 2011.

Survived by his son and wife, Allen J. Davia, DDS and Robin Davia, and by his two grandchildren, Laura (Andrew) Kistler, and Brian (Delphine) Davia. He is also survived by his sister Lois Jean Wenkel, of Wonder Lake, IL.

Dr. Davia was raised in Maywood, IL, a western suburb of Chicago, and attended Proviso East High School where he met his wife-to-be, Elaine, whom he married in 1959 while he was in medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.

After graduation from medical school in 1962, he joined the US Army Medical Corps and was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu for a rotating internship followed by two years as a battalion surgeon in the 25th Infantry Division, and then a three-year residency in internal medicine at Tripler. Both children were born in Honolulu.

In 1968 he was transferred to Valley Forge Army Hospital in Pennsylvania, and in 1970 the family moved to Silver Spring, MD, close to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, where he took training in cardiology. He remained on the staff of the cardiology service at Walter Reed and also had clinical appointments at Georgetown University and at the Uniformed University of Health Sciences. In 1978, Dr. Davia became chief of the cardiology service at Walter Reed where he remained until 1983 when he retired as a full colonel from the US Army after 21 years of active duty.

The family then moved to Overland Park, KS, where he was in the private practice of cardiology for 17 years. In 2000 they moved to Richmond, VA, where he joined the teaching staff in the cardiology service at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Davia was very active as a Sunday School teacher at River Road United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held at Woody Funeral Home in Richmond on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 11 a.m. The service will be followed by a family gravesite internment.

Dr. Davia was a master cardiologist and a great teacher. I was lucky to learn from him.
