James Phipps Obituary
November 27, 1949 - September 27, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Arthur Phipps on September 27th, 2024, in Richmond, VA. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.
Born and raised in Valley Stream, NY, Jim graduated from Adelphi University where he met the love of his life Catherine Cooney. Jim and Cathy raised their children in Malverne, NY before moving to Richmond in 1991. Jim was the President of Red River Foods, embarking on a 40-year career importing nuts, seeds and dried fruits from around the world. Jim was a respected leader with a reputation as a sharp business mind but a compassionate and caring friend to colleagues, customers and suppliers.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was driven by a deep curiosity and passion for knowledge. His favorite pastime was engaging in conversations with people on any range of topics. He loved diving into discussions and cherished the connections made through thoughtful exchanges. Over the years, Jim immersed himself in a wide range of activities, including reading, boating, biking, painting, photography, golfing, fishing, and shooting. He had a warm, open heart and saw the beauty in everything around him, giving him a deep appreciation for music and art and a reverence for nature.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Catherine Phipps, three children, Lauren (Chris) Nicholl, Daniel (Beth) Phipps, and Suzanne Phipps, two cherished grandchildren, KC and James Phipps, and his brother, Ron (Pam) Phipps. He is predeceased by his parents, Harold and Emily Phipps.
Jim will be remembered for his fighting but gentle spirit, unwavering commitment to his family, and lasting impact on everyone who knew him. The outpouring of support and heartfelt messages from around the world has been a humbling and moving reminder of the deep connections he maintained throughout his life.
