Jewel Faison Obituary
Jewel Cowan Faison, a lifelong resident of Mechanicsville, VA, died at home on February 27, 2026. She was born on November 19, 1928, in Richmond, VA, to Samuel T. and Ethel Waters Cowan of Mechanicsville, then known by the post office as Ellerson.
Jewel was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Gilbert L. Faison; her son, Patrick C. Faison; and her sister, Imogene C. Coberly. She is survived by her daughter, Michele Lugene Faison of Mechanicsville, as well as three nieces and four nephews.
A proud member of Virginia Tech's class of 1949, Jewel studied architecture and met her future husband, Gil, during her time there. Together, they built a life steeped in Hokie pride, attending countless football games there and hosting game-day gatherings in the home she designed herself. However, to their great chagrin, neither of their children opted to attend the university in Blacksburg.
Jewel's warmth and kindness touched many lives; she had a ready ear for her friends, of whom there were many. She was affectionately known for years as "Grandma Jewel" to neighborhood children. An accomplished artist, she found joy in painting and in traveling the world with Gil. Their adventures included cultural exchanges through Friendship Force and numerous cruises that enriched their shared experiences.
A woman of deep faith, Jewel began her spiritual journey at Fairmont Baptist Church before joining Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church with her family when the children were young. Most recently, she was a member of New Hanover Presbyterian Church.
Jewel's loving presence and Hanover drawl will be deeply missed more than she could have imagined.
We will celebrate Jewel's long, full life at New Hanover Presbyterian Church, 10058 Chamberlayne Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116, at a later date. Instead of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Chapters Hospice (10330 Staples Mill Rd., Ste. 204, Glen Allen, VA 23060) or to one's house of worship.
