Dear Lisa, Mark , and Family ,
Thank you for sharing your dad with so many of us. I met him when I was starting my third year in medical school and was fortunate to have one on one guidance as he consulted on patients in the hospital. Following his lead, that was my career for 45 years. He was a wonderful mentor and friend. He sent me to see impaired children in a school in southern Michigan where he had worked. I was a chief resident/fellow and later a faculty member until I left in 1990 to go to Vermont. Even then he was giving me guidance , nominating me for distingued honors and greeting me warmly when we met up with him and Nancy. Hawaii was a very special one. This past July I read to my classmates at our 50th anniversary his words as dictated to Lisa. I have no words to express what this meant to everyone who remembered him so fondly. My heart goes out to all of you. He was one of a kind and will remain in my heart forever. Again thank you for sharing him with so many, Kathy Franco

To continue:
In addition to Wolverines. Go Blue!! I was hired as the director of adolescent inpatient unit of a newly opening child and adolescent psychiatric hospital, Kobacker Center of Medical College of Ohio in 1982 He supported and guided my career, serving on multiple organizations under his leadership, American Academy of Child and adolescent psychiatry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Society of professors, etc. We also enjoyed in participating in the faculty gourmet club. He is a Midwest gentleman with a good pedigree who valued teaching, patient care and mentoring. We all appreciate his mentorship and leadership. I´m sorry I can´t attend the funeral service as I am now traveling out of country but my thoughts are with him and his family. I bet Nancy and Joel met again happily and their spirits continue to guide us!

Joel was an outstanding chair and a good man: a true gentleman and a scholar. He hired me in 1981 as a new assistant professor to set up the neuropsychology service in the department and made sure that I had what I needed to get my career started. He was a builder and I owe him a great deal. I will miss him and as will his many junior colleagues whom he counseled. R.I.P. Joel.
