John Boughton Obituary

John Hervey Boughton Jr.

July 4, 1931 - May 17, 2025

John Hervey Boughton, Jr., 93, of West Point, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on July 4, 1931, to John Hervey Boughton, Sr. and Jessie James. He grew up in Truehart Virginia where he was raised by his grandparents, Warren and Myrtle Boughton.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie, and his daughter, Brenda Varboncoeur. John is survived by his wife Susan Boughton, daughter Donna Hadley (Matt), grandchildren Lauren Varboncoeur, Carter Hadley, and Monroe Hadley.

After graduating from Pleasant Hill High School in 1948, he moved to West Point for work. It was in there that he met his sweetheart, Susan Carter and they married on March 24, 1951, at First Baptist Church and were together for over 74 years.

John served his country in the Virginia Army National Guard for eight years during the 1950s. He worked various jobs at local auto shops and grocery stores and later went to work at the Chesapeake Corporation where he retired as storeroom crew leader after 35 years.

John loved a good deal and spent weekends working as an auctioneer. He attended the Mendenhall Auctioneer School in High Point, NC and became a member of both the Virginia and National Auctioneer Associations. He was on the Board of Directors and received the first Spoke Award. Each year, John and Susan attended the State and National Conventions traveling many miles while seeing most of the country, where they had great times with fellow auctioneer friends.

John was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in West Point where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School President, and was a member many other committees. He was also active in the West Point Jaycees, working on projects that helped the town thrive.

For years, John and his family spent weekends soaking in the beauty and relaxing at Grey's Point Campground on the Rappahannock River. Whether casting a line, picking out crabs or telling stories around the fire, John cherished every moment surrounded by family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2025, at First Baptist Church of West Point, 414 Fourth Street, West Point, VA 23181. The family will receive friends starting at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the First Baptist Church of West Point, P.O. Box N, West Point, VA 23181, or at https://www.fbcwestpoint.org/online-giving; or to the West Point Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box X, West Point, VA 23181, or at https://westpointvfd.com/.
