Dr. John B. Catlett, 83, a physician and allergist in Richmond for almost fifty years, died on February 17, 2006 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Richard H. Catlett and Martha Barton Catlett. Dr. Catlett was a graduate of St. Christopher's School, Hampden Sydney College and the University of Virginia Medical School, where he was a member of the Raven Society. He practiced with the McGuire Clinic at St. Luke's Hospital in Richmond from 1955 until 1986 when he established Catlett Allergy Associates from which he retired in 2001. He was a member of a number of medical associations and a former president of the Southeastern Allergy Association, the Asthma and Allergy Society of Virginia, the Richmond Society of Internal Medicine and the Virginia Society of Internal Medicine. He was also responsible for establishing the Oscar B. Swineford Allergy Fund to endow a faculty chair in honor of Dr. Swineford at the University of Virginia Medical School. Dr. Catlett served as a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member and former vestryman of St. James's Episcopal Church and was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Westminster Canterbury. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Out of Bounds Club, a local golf group. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Sharon Sutherland Catlett; a daughter, Jane Sutherland Catlett and her husband, Michael Schwartz of Arlington; a son, John B. Catlett Jr. and his wife, M. Katharine Spong of Richmond; two grandchildren, Katharine Shelby Catlett and John B. Catlett III; a brother, Richard H. Catlett Jr. of Richmond; and a sister, Jane Catlett Ballard of Philadelphia. The family suggests that friends who would like to make charitable contributions in memory of Dr. Catlett, consider making them to the Oscar Swineford Allergy Fund, University of Virginia, P.O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, Virginia or the Westminster Canterbury Foundation, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23227. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21, followed by a reception at the church.
