John Doumlele Obituary

DOUMLELE, John Antony, of Powhatan County, entered a new life on January 17, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Hailey Doumlele; a son, John Antony Doumlele Jr. and his wife, Leigh Grant, of Norwalk, Conn.; a daughter, Suzanne Doumlele Owen and her husband, Dr. Thomas Owen, of Richmond; grandchildren, Dr. Randall Owen and his wife, Dr. Meredith Owen, of Williamsburg, Dr. Courtney Owen Mattes and her husband, Joshua Mattes, of Midlothian, Nicholas Doumlele and Kyra Doumlele, of Norwalk, Conn.; two sisters, Joanna "Lula" Logiotatos of Richmond and Catherine Kiriakides and her husband, Alex Kiriakides, of Greenville, S.C.; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Nicholas Doumlele. Mr. Doumlele retired from a civil service career. He graduated from the University of Richmond and entered service as a naval officer in World War II. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign, the American Campaign and in the Philippine Liberation. Mr. Doumlele enjoyed gardening and travel and visited more than 20 countries. His life was defined by the ideal of a caring father and a loving husband, non pareil. His grandchildren were his special joy, and he was an avid spectator at numerous tennis matches and basketball, field hockey and soccer games. He spent many joyous summers at his vacation home, Happy Ours, fishing, crabbing and boating with the grandchildren. His remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service beginning at 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be private. Remembrances may be made to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Children's Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.
