John Kennedy Obituary

John Kennedy

October 24, 1955 - March 12, 2025

John Michael Kennedy, 69, a proud and humble husband, father, brother, friend and community servant, died unexpectedly at his Bon Air home on March 12. A Rockville Centre, N.Y., native, John spent nearly 46 years married to the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty). In addition to Betty; he is survived by the pride of his life, sons John and his wife, Melissa; Andrew and his wife, Joyce; Patrick and his wife Anneliese; and William and his wife, Candice. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Connor, Oliver, Grayson, Cora, Miles, and Parker. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Charlotte Kennedy; and was a loving and loyal brother to Kathleen, Mary Anne, Susan, William, Maureen, Patricia, Mary Elizabeth, and Timothy.

John loved nothing more than time with his family and friends, and his greatest joys included fishing, playing the guitar, and floating down the James River during the annual Batteau Festival. He was a tireless servant, willingly dropping everything to help family, friends and strangers. His quick wit and endless stories brought joy to all. John's humor, compassion and love for life created unforgettable memories that will sustain his wife and children, who were blessed with the unshakable certainty of his love and pride in them. John earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Maritime and his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. His love of the outdoors is reflected in John's remarkable 39 year career at the Department of Environmental Quality.

Fittingly, a celebration of life will be held on March 22, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Bon Air Community Association, 8725 Quaker Lane, where John and Betty were mainstays for many years as their sons competed in swim meets. In lieu of flowers, the family believes it would be John's wish that donations be made to the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center, cfboc.org/donate.

I met John when he began volunteering in the Pantry at the Chesterfield Food Bank and Outreach Center. He was a great help to those working in the Pantry and we were always glad to see his smiling face. You see, most of the volunteers in the Pantry are senior ladies and always glad of a helping hand for the heavy lifting. He always had a good joke and we knew by what he shared he was very proud of his family. Little did I know that on Monday, 3/10 it would be the last time we would see him and that JJ and I would listen to one of his jokes and then look at each other in confusion. The joke went over our heads and that gave us more of a laugh then the joke itself. He will be sorely missed. May God bless you as you journey through this unexpected loss. Your family is in my prayers. Sandi Stone, CFBOC

John was a loyal co-worker at the DEQ! In addition to doing his career work there, he offered his talents to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) where he played his guitar to help raise funds for the over 2,000 charities! He was an awesome co-worker and friend! Rest in Peace good and faithful servant!
