John Mellish Obituary

MELLISH, John Robert, died September 19, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 6, 1920, in Crawley, England, and moved to Richmond in 1972. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jean; his daughter, Beverley Mellish Wiese and her husband, Kevin, of Richmond; his son, Stuart Mellish, his wife, Andrea, and their children, Travis, Ethan, and Leanne, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and a brother, Gordon and his wife, Grace, of Worthing, England. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, George, and Leslie. John was an avid rugby and cricket player while in England and became a rugby referee after retiring from playing. After moving to Richmond he continued his refereeing career briefly and then became a referee evaluator. He was much sought after for his advice on refereeing and traveled all over the U.S. to attend rugby tournaments. He leaves behind many friends in the rugby community. He served in the RAF during WWII in India and Burma. After the war he began a 43-year career with Molins Machine Company, initially in London (1947 to 1972) and then in Richmond (1972 to 1990). John was an avid reader, crossword puzzler, sports fan and family man. He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends all over the world. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 27, 2007, at 12 noon at Bliley's -Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time. Jean and Family:
We lost a good man. I recall many chats over the Laws and most of all I recall his love of the sport without personal agendas. His early work set the table.

Jean,Stuart and Beverly,

My heart felt sympathy to you all. John was a big influence on many an American rugby player and referee. If ever there was a personifcation of "giving back to rugby" it was John. For my era, players and referees, John was one of the great teachers along with Bill Nelson and Don Morrison. He shall be missed not only for his contributions to USA rugby but also by the many friendships he forged along the way. He was a very honest and caring man. He will be missed!

Thank you so much for sharing John with us in the rugby community. His generosity and dedication were exemplary, and the influence he had on us is impossible to relate in words. John's integrity and bonhomie has been and will always be an inspiration for as long as I live. He lives in the hearts of all those who were lucky enough to get to know him.

My condolences to the Mellish family, John was a big influence on my rugby career, as my first coach he (being a #8 also) taught my position well, he helped me learn the laws (never call them rules) & always had great stories while enjoying a pint after practice or game. I'll never forget our trip to Mexico together w/ UVA.John will be sorely missed by all.

I remember John Mellish well as a young player with Norfolk City RFC. I held immense respect for John's ability to ref and manage 30 rugby players during a match. My deepest sympathy to John's family. Godspeed.
