John Myers Obituary

RICHMOND – John G. Myers Jr., a consummate salesman who made and kept friends easily died Nov. 11 at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center after a period of declining health.

He was 74.

Prior to retiring, John was first vice president at Cushman Wakefield Thalheimer in Richmond, where he sold commercial real estate.

He volunteered at Mended Hearts of Richmond, talking with patients facing heart surgery.

He was active on the boards of United Way Virginia, Downtown YMCA, Jewish Family Services, the Faison Center School and Center for Autism and other nonprofits. He took an interest in issues surrounding disability employment as well.

People mattered to him.

He loved spending time with friends old and new, enjoyed music, art, travel, golf, beaches and sunsets. He also loved his dogs. He was generous, and had a disarming sense of humor that belied an underlying thoughtfulness.

Since childhood and through most of his adulthood, he spent a week every summer at Capon Springs and Farm in West Virginia with his family.

Born April 15, 1951 in Richmond, he was the only son of Marian (Hoffman) and John G. "Jack" Myers. John graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1969 and from the University of Virginia with a major in English. He had a passion for writing and storytelling.

After graduating from college, he lived in New York City, West Virginia and Pennsylvania prior to moving back to Richmond.

He was married for 20 years to Christina Tinger. The couple had two sons.

He later married Junie Speight, whom he cherished, She died unexpectedly in 2021.

John then met Teresa DiRosa, who became his companion for the rest of his life. The two commuted between Short Pump and Norfolk, Va., where they bought a house on the beach.

In addition to his sons, Matthew Myers of Henrico, and Jonathan (Renata) Myers, he leaves a grandson Logan, and a granddaughter, Lindsay, all of Mount Sinai, N.Y. John's family would like to acknowledge the dedicated and loving service of Adrienne Bush.

A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Goochland on Monday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Way Virginia or Downtown YMCA.

Yesterday

John's nature inhabited the contradictions of a remarkable person. Born to a small family he quickly embraced the outsized dynamics of the greater DiRosa clan. A man of considerable privilege, he identified with the marginalized. He was as comfortable at Mass as at Temple. He didn't necessarily need to be generous, attentive to everyone or invested in people he barely knew, but he was all of these things and the world is better for it. Even Penny, our little Yorkie-Poo, seemed to sense his welcoming spirit, preferring his company even in a room of familiar faces. John will be greatly missed by all who encountered his warmth and generosity.

John and I were Indian Guides dads. Out of that grew both a business relationship and a friendship lasting 30+ years. I am saddened by his passing.
