John Michael Provost
November 27, 1954 - October 15, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Michael Provost, who departed this life Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Born on November 27, 1954, John was raised in North Babylon, located on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. He graduated from North Babylon High School in 1972, and then from Madison College (now known as James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1976. John moved from Harrisonburg to the District of Columbia for a short period of time before moving to Richmond where he lived with his wife and daughter for 19 years. In 2007, he and his family moved to Mechanicsville, Virginia, where he lived for another 18 years. John held a career as a certified public accountant for 47 years. He was a man of many hobbies, which included soccer, kayaking, and fly fishing. He was an avid watcher of the Premier League soccer, a Liverpool fan through and through.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Provost; sisters, Jacqueline Provost and Joanne Katsionis; and niece, Danielle Esernio. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra Provost; his daughter, Caroline Provost; his sisters, Jean Mallow, Judy Dennis (James), and Helen Wissing (Jim); his beloved nieces and nephews, Brian Shedlick, Jacqueline Shedlick-Early, Jimmy Dennis, Justin Mallow, Steven Mallow, Salvatore Esernio, Phillip Esernio, Alex Katsionis, Cynthia Katsionis, Beth Wissing, and Mason Wissing; and his many treasured great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends between 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 23, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., Mechanicsville, VA. A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 24, at Saint Benedict Catholic Church, 300 N Sheppard St., Richmond, VA, 23221. He will be laid to eternal rest at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, where he will overlook the James River, a place of such fond memories. Flowers can be sent to the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home.
Johnny, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. We ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had.
