John P. "Jack" Utz

John P. "Jack" Utz, M.D., a former Dean of the School of Medicine at Georgetown University, veteran and pioneer in the field of infectious diseases, died peacefully at sundown on April 4, 2006, surrounded by his family at the Hospice of Naples, Florida. He was 83. Dr. Utz was born June 9, 1922 in Rochester, Minnesota to Gilbert Charles and Marion (Hoy) Utz. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout at 16. He graduated with honors from Rochester High School in 1940. After graduation from Notre Dame University, he enrolled in Northwestern University School of Medicine. In 1946, he received his M.D. degree, was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and later transferred to the U.S. Public Health Service. He completed his internship at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston in 1947. Dr. Utz received his Master of Science degree from Georgetown University in 1949 and completed a residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He was appointed Chief of the Infectious Disease Service at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., where he served from 1952 to 1965. He was a visiting professor at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, from 1962 to 1963, and was inducted into the Academie de Medicins Francais. From 1965 to 1973, Dr. Utz was chief of the division of immunology and infectious diseases at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. From 1973 to 1978, Dr. Utz served as the Dean of the School of Medicine at Georgetown University. He was on the infectious disease service at Georgetown University Hospital from 1973 until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Utz was the founder of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and served on its board of directors for more than 25 years. He also served as the Foundation president from 1991 to 1994. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Griffin) Utz of Naples, Fla.; and his five children, Jane (Utz) Hamilton of Richmond, Christopher Utz of Naples, Fla., Charles Utz and his wife, Kim, of Vineyard Haven, Mass., Jonathan Utz and his wife, Mary Ann, of Madison, Wis. and Stephen Utz and his wife, Susan, of Naples, Fla.; brothers, David C. Utz, M.D. and Philip H. Utz, M.D., both of Rochester, Minn.; and six grandchildren also survive him. Visiting hours will be at Fuller Funeral Home on Sunday, April 9, 1625 Pine Ridge Rd., Naples, Fla., from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at St. William Catholic Church in Naples, Fla. on Monday, April 10, at 1:30 p.m. Honoring his request, Dr. Utz will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at a time to be determined.
