Joseph Durrett Obituary

Joseph R. Durrett Jr., 93, passed away on November 16, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia.

Born on October 17, 1932 in Oak Hill, W VA, Joe was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Greenbriar Military School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. Joe served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for two years, training to be a paratrooper, before embarking on a long career as a civil and structural engineer. He also shared his knowledge as an adjunct faculty member at Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University, and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Nancy K. Durrett, and his parents, Joseph R. Durrett and Yula Nuckols Durrett. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Joseph R. Durrett III (Christian), David E. Durrett (Susan), and Kathy Gentry (Wayne); his brother Tom Durrett (Becky); five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A devoted family man, Joe coached Little League baseball, camped in the "Durrett Hilton" tent with his family, drove cross country for adventures with loved ones, skied, planted trees, delivered Christmas gifts to refugees, and attended numerous children's, grand and great grandchildren's athletic endeavors, recitals, and school functions through the years. He always made the effort and time to be present.

Joe was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church starting in 1964. At various times, he served on the Vestry, was superintendent of the church school and served on a variety of committees at the church and regional level.

He loved growing plants from seeds, especially hostas, to raise money for St. Thomas Church, and to give to friends and family. The yards of his children and grandchildren proudly display the fruits of his green thumb. Even after moving to Westminster Canterbury, he continued to cultivate his hostas on the steps of the 8th floor emergency exit, lining the emergency exit steps with greenery despite gentle protests.

He was a true gentleman. He had a twinkle in his eye for all of us but especially Nancy. At his 92nd birthday with his bride, children, grand and great grandchildren he reached for Mom's hand, smiled, gave her a wink and blew her a kiss. Even with dementia, Nancy's eyes sparkled and she squeezed his hand. His affectionate nickname "Kid" was shared warmly with each family member-always accompanied by a hug and the words "Love you, kid."

Joe had a deep love for military history-particularly World War II-and was a lifelong learner who found joy in reading and exploring new interests. In later years, he took up woodworking and jewelry making, crafting beautiful necklaces for many loved ones, friends and family. He was a long-time bridge player and cherished time spent with his friends in The Bridge Club. He loved college basketball and was a big fan of the VCU Rams. A passionate world traveler alongside Nancy, he also treasured family vacations to Emerald Isle for more than three decades. He always made the children help him put up the dreaded green tarp at the beach so that the babies wouldn't get sunburned.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 3602 Hawthorne Avenue, Richmond, VA 23222, on January 3, 2026. Visitation will take place from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m., followed by the service and reception at 1:00 p.m. Joe will be honored for his service to his country by a military honor guard during the service.

Joe's legacy is one of love, faith, and kindness-a life well-lived that touched many.

I´m so sorry for your loss. I never meet Joseph but thought of him often. His father was my grandfather, my dad was his half brother. I learned about Joseph and Thomas through genealogy research, but never had the opportunity to meet either of them. RIP Uncle Joseph.

I offer my condolences. My 2 late brothers were alums of Greenbriar MS, and shared Mr. Durrett´s school pride as well as his love of the military.
