I got the privilege of working with Josie for a short time at Books-A-Million before she passed. She was always there to greet me with a smile. She had this unique ability to make everyone want to know her better and be her friend. Part of her charm was her petite, lovely appearance which contrasted so well with her fascination with anything horror. I was heartbroken to discover her death, as she and I had planned to spend time together the following weekend. My prayers go to her family, friends, and husband John. I take comfort in the fact knowing she died loved, happy, and successful. She is watching over us with a smile, waiting for us to join her.

I just learned of this today..so sad, she interviewed me in my home/studio for her magazine in august of 2011. She had such a sweet disposition, so humble. I am so sorry to hear this terrible news. Such a talented young woman. May she rest in peace. I wish the family peace and send my condolences. So tragic. I am quite upset to hear this. RIP Dear Josephine, and may your dreams live on through your magazine. It will be your legacy. R.I.P.

Dear John, I wanted to express my sympathy to you and your family for the tragic and sudden loss of Josie. I did not personally know her, but reading comments from her family and friends, I know this to be a tremendous loss for all of you. I and a team of emergency responders worked aggressively and compassionately to provide aid to Josie that night. I am profoundly sorry more could not be done. Your friends at FVRS will be their to support you as you move forward in your life. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Jan, Theresa, John and Family, i may have lost touch with Josie through the years but i will never forget her for as long as i live. She was one of the most true and hard working people ive met. Cumberland is a small place and even smaller when you all go to the same school with each other since kindergarten many of my fondest childhood memories include Josie due to this. She is a beautiful soul who will never be forgotten and will always be remembered. RIP Josie
Very Respectfully,

Jan, you and your family have been in my prayers since I heard the news about Josie. I am so sorry for your loss. Josie was such a sweet young lady. You taught her well. I will never forget the summer she went to Nags Head with Lauren and Tyler brought Ben with him. All the kids were so good with Amber - she was only a toddler at the time, but they spent time with her. Cherish your memories of her and all smiles she brought to your life and to others.

Although I didn't know Josie very well, she sat next to me in Spanish class our last semester at VCU and made me smile at every class meeting. Anyone that heard her speaking Spanish will feel the same way- so funny. Josie was bright and hardworking. We both looked forward to putting our waitressing careers behind us after graduation. My thoughts are with her husband and family, and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Josie was a beautiful person, inside and out. I knew her as a student, child of a dear friend, scouts, sports and as an inspiring artist. I worked with Josie in Art in the elementary level...she was also one of my "helpers" through safety patrol in the mornings in the Art room. Very hard working, great sense of adventure and humor....Jan, Teresa and husband of Josie....my thoughts and prayers go with you today and for as long as they are needed. Much love to you....God will hold your hand through it all....

my very good, dear friend. Josie. very witty girl. impressively knowledgable, but humble about it. shy yet outgoing. daring but timid. a complicated person. a true intellectual. COMPLETE NERD (and dork, and geek!!). humourous. funny. clever. sad, joyful and full of energy and spontaneity. kind...AND devilish. always being fun. adorable as hell. SO cute. fellow lefty. but most of all, a great kid. my thoughts go out to her husband, John-another person with many of these descriptions, a great guy! i am also thinking of her other friends and family. she'll be missed...very much so. and she coined the word "Bort," (used to describe me), which means "SHORT and BORING person!" hey, she was one too!! hahahaha! so glad i got to know her through the past years. it hurts to think she is gone, but you know, if she were still here, she would be lightening the mood. Love you, Josie-girl.

God Bless them during this trying time.

Josie was a great student and I enjoyed working with her as her VCU professor several years ago. She always showed enthusiasm and, whenever I spoke with her, was extremely excited about her future. When I teach other students about multimedia, I still use a slideshow that Josie and two of her classmates created during the 2008 presidential elections. I am heartbroken about her passing, and extend my sincerest sympathies to Josie's husband and family. God bless.
