Larry Rolando Obituary

Larry Lee Rolando

March 22, 1949 - October 13, 2024

Larry Lee Rolando, 75, passed away on October 13, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Larry graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1968. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974. Larry was a founding member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity chapter.

Larry worked for his stepfather at Compton's Wrecking & Body Shop until they closed in 1998. He then found his true calling in teaching driver's education, working for Friendly's Driving School before co-founding RVA Driving Academy. Larry was passionate about his work & took great pride in the success of his students.

Larry was a proud VCU alum, being a devoted season ticket holder for the Rams basketball team since 1983, rarely missing a game. Those seated in his section got to know Larry quickly, as he was one of the first to let the refs know when they made the wrong call, or when the Rams needed to focus & get it together.

In his later years, Larry bravely battled White Matter Disease & Dementia. Despite these challenges, he remained strong in spirit. His family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff of Suncrest Hospice, & the Butterflies Support Group at Derbyshire Baptist Church.

Larry is predeceased by his mother, Anna Marie Rolando Compton, father, Robert Lee Queensberry, & his step-father, Noah Arson Compton Jr. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Tony, & daughter-in-law Bethany; two beloved grandsons, Cody & Parker; half-sisters, Roberta Queensberry Grant and Karlene Queensberry Lynch; & loving, extended family in Rome, Italy.

Family & friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Grove Avenue Church, 8701 Ridge Road. A reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to Circle Center Adult Day Services.

I have so many fond memories of Ro.. Easy to like and enjoyable to be around. Like Dewey, we all spent time talking about VCU basketball. From watching practices at Franklin St to the enjoyment of a roadtrip, or discussing music or TDC, life in general and our families. Ro had the gift of gab.
I'm very sorry for your loss, Barbara. You two seemed to be not only happily married, but the best of friends. Please take solace in the fact that Someone remembered never truly dies. Ro will live on in our thoughts and memories.

He could tell you the artist and year of any 50´s and 60´s song. He and I were present at many of the VCU basketball highlights (beating host Louisville in the first round of the Metro tournament comes to mind).
But our friendship grew beyond basketball. Debbie and I meeting Larry and Barbara at Applebees on Friday, Larry and I walking in American Heart Walk,.....There are so many memories and I pray that they, and knowing he has taken his place in the kingdom of God ,will be a source of comfort to all his friends and family.
